Prelude to a Good Start 2021 started off bright and promising but ended up on a melancholic note of reflection and re-alignment. I un-Friended most of my Chiang Mai 'woke' friends and ultimately left Facebook, happy to just have a few but trusted friends. This created a void that seems to be filled in with the onset of 2022.
PEOPLESCAPE
Simona For friendship, Simona has been a constant. We spend a lot of time together at Moka Coffee, here at Nawa Saraan, at one nimman either for yoga or body combat. I get to meet her friends too - the hiking group, Lisa, Praew. She would be the one I would be most comfortable with.
Phu Khao Phu Khao and I used to just talk at the park, but lately, we've been hanging out. We coffee at My Moka Coffee, he conducted a meditation class for me and Coco, he attends my yoga ABS class and we even plan on hiking. He's good energy who has many layered dimensions to himself. He's been a monk, lived in a hippie commune, took lessons in martial arts in China, lived in Fiji with the natives, etc. His fitness level will shame guys half his age. Modesty aside, I feel that the 2 of us are great examples of how to defy the aging process through fitness, spirituality (nothing to do with the woke-b.s.), and healthy habits.
Coco Everything about Coco had the unmistakable stamp of synchronicity - for her and for me. I wasn't supposed to go to one nimman for yoga, but I did. When I got on the wrong floor, I should have come down to the ground floor, but I didn't. I should have just attended a yoga class, but instead, I taught a class - Coco being one of 3 who attended. She was a complete stranger. But in 2 hours, she was already my hotelmate for a scheduled 3-week stay. She was going through a process as I also was.
The next few days saw us doing the marketing together, long sharing over breakfast, making bread and hanging out - all in good friendship. I introduced her to my friends - Simona, Yadling, and took her with me to My Secret Cafe and Boy Blues Bar for live music. She would cook complicated Chinese dishes and share her food with me. I actually felt she was nurturing me through her food.
Jason Ryer Zen Strength On his way out of Chiang Mai, Jason and I somehow started hooking up for coffee, first at my place and then at my newly discovered cafe truck, My Moka Coffee. Before in his former place where he was hosting ice baths and bio hacker meetups, the conversation was group talk. But in our one-on-one coffee talks, it was more private and personal. Unlike some woke healers spewing dharma-b.s. but a train-wreck inside, Jason is solid and grounded. He isn't readily caught up in popular trends as his critical thinking seems to be constantly active. We default into bio hacking, intentional communities, fitness, the emerging Orwelian order, and just about anything worth discussing. Intelligent, insightful, balanced and always in-search-of, I find his company stimulating, engaging and a paradigm expander. He was scheduled to leave Chiang Mai before yearend 2021, but Covid had other plans. The silver lining to that is that he's here to stay.
With Jason Ryer's continuing stay in Chiang Mai, he resumed his Biohacker meetup and Wim Hof breathwork/ice bath events. This has been a good place to meet new people who are not from the yoga community but grounded, pro-active and forward-thinking - like Jason himself, where he attracts like-minded people. Here, I've met Kris and Kevin together with other promising characters.
Kris
At one of Jason Ryer's ice baths, I met Kris, a 25-year old Lithuanian who seemed to be on a fast-forward trajectory towards enlightenment. But he's doing it the smart pro-active, pro-thinking way. He reads a lot, and more importantly, he makes it his practice - so it's not just intellectual adventurism. Our coffee talks would extend for hours where he picks my brains and also offers some of his insights. Through him, I met Artem. Both join my ABS Fitness Challenge and attend my Saturday yoga ABS classes.
ABS Fitness Challenge To kickstart the new year, I also resumed my long tradition of an ABS showdown. 3 people participated. To complement the program, I resumed my Saturday yoga classes, but this one focused on ABS development. I was also beginning to gain weight and the need for an intense program was needed to get back on trail.
Yoga ABS class - me, Phu Khao, Arek, Kris, Praew and Artem
Money Money was scarce, at one time going down to B20 (thank God there was ample food in the fridge), but I was never worried. For due-diligence, I put the word out about developing blogs for young kids, and yes, the ABS Fitness Challenge(but money was never the motivation). Loose change would trickle in, but nothing substantial. The universe has always provided - that's all I had to keep in mind. Besides, the synchronicities are a sure sign I'm being watched and looked after.
A Podcast/Day As a New Year resolution, I embarked on listening to and blogging one podcast a day. Why? There are so many self-styled gurus out there sharing their experience, knowledge and insight - for free! Just listen to the podcasts of Joe Rogan, Tim Bilyeu and Bryan Rose. They carefully select their guests - people who stand tall in their field. What they share is a treasure trove. I take the lesson in as an FYI or a call to action. I have listened to much more, but I've only blogged Jiddu Krishnamurti, Moran Cerf and Donald Hoffman.
Covid Vaccine The pressure to get vaccinated never lets up. I kept looking for ways to bypass the process and remain vax-free. My prospect to go back to the Philippines complicates this process.
Just when things seemed easing up, a new Covid variant took the world by storm - Omicron. Of course, in addition to the 2 first shots, another booster shot is required. It was a clever way to get the public pummeled down with shot upon shot, weakening their bodies and perhaps killing them. Videos of people just falling dead after taking the shot are going viral but never in the mainstream press. What's interesting about Omicron is that in less than a month, it already spread to over 100 countries. How could that be when global travel is still restricted? I got my answer when I watched Dr. Andrew Kaufman explaining that the source of Omicron was the testing itself - clever!

Just how powerful is the cabal(the globalist proponents of the New World Order)? I was watching an interview with hedge fund guru, Felix Zulauf about how to invest in these uncertain times. But somewhere in the interview, the talk touched on the Great Reset(a regurgitated version of the highly controversial Agenda 21). Zulauf mentioned that when he asked the Swiss government why they signed up on the Great Reset, the answer was revealing, "they can make life very hard for us if we don't comply". A powerful European country being arm-twisted by the cabal? Now, that is powerful! This is even more credible because this interview was not about conspiracy theories, but about investment!

Music Scene The music scene is resuming its normalcy. Tuesday nights at My Secret Cafe / Organ Bar, Thursdays at Paapu House and the weekends at Boy Blues Bar. If not for the scarcity of money, I'd be out every night like old times. But I still manage to show up and nurse my soda water - perhaps the minimum admission fee. Coco joined me at My Secret Cafe and Boy Blues Bar - a new thing for her.

Hike to Wat Pha Lat I go back to nature once a week, usually Tuesdays, by hiking along the Monk's Trail to Wat Pha Lat. The trailhead is only about 30 mins by bicycle, the hike about 30 mins, and I take about an hour chilling out on the temple grounds by the cascading stream. I do my own picnic (coffee on thermal pot & bread), do my Wim Hof breathing, and then meditate. It's an uplifting weekly indulgence.

I could have joined a hiking group but I realized that all I wanted was to be in nature which was nearby (so there is no need to travel an hour when I can go to the trailhead by bike in 30 mins), I wasn't going out for a workout(so there is no need to hike for 4 hours with a group), and what I wanted was quality me-time where I can do my picnic and meditation on temple grounds (not possible when with a group as they might like to socialize and do other activities).

Body Combat Tuesdays at 6:30pm is free Body Combat at one nimman. It's tough because I make it tough on myself, going full-on with my kicks, punches, knees and elbows. I use proper form so it resembles more of a kata than a gym cardio workout. It's like going on the ring and giving full assault on an invisible enemy. My body aches for the next 2 days.

Ending Thoughts Even though things are resuming back to normal, I face the specter of leaving Chiang Mai. Everything here seems to be for the moment only until I leave. When that happens, I'll be leaving on a good note.

(Feb 28, 2022) Since Jan 2, 2019, except for occassional visa-runs and Covid stranding (in Nong Khai), Chiang Mai has been home - my oasis, my paradise, my Shangrila. These last 3 years felt like a lifetime of abundance, introspection, evolution, growth and an unexpected transformational struggle. But like everything else, it cannot last forever. I had to tie up loose ends and brace myself for the next chapter.....more »»

Chiang Mai FYI / Tips
crop-burning season in Chiang Mai is between late Feb to early April. But laws change everytime. This year, 2019, there is a 61-day ban on burning so the farmers started burning early. When my plane was approaching Chiang Mai on Jan 24, 2019, there was already a thick blanket of smog covering the entire city (and beyond). But within the city itself, you won't feel it (but that doesn't mean the air is healthy). To monitor air conditions in real time, refer to site: Chiang Mai Air Pollution: Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI)
hot season begins March and lasts until June
wet season begins July and lasts until September
best time to visit Chiang Mai is mid-September to mid-February - after the monsoon and before the burning
you have to try Khao Soi, this is north Thailand's culinary staple
the tourist area where most of the hotels, restaurants, ticket offices, tour operators are, is located in the Old City
to exchange your dollars to Thai Baht, the Super Rich Money Exchange give the best rates. There are many branches scattered around Chiang Mai

B273 #51 sleeping train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Book Online - direct booking with State Railway of Thailand. Best to register first. If going to BKK from CNX, click "Northern Line".
note -- big difference between booking direct with the State Railway and booking with an online 3rd party agent. 12GO was charging B1330 for the same trip that only cost me B941 with the State Railway.
note -- Oct 2022, I took the #10 Train from CNX to BKK, upper berth, 2nd class, a/c, sleeper, B941. The train was clean, fast, comfortable and modern. If you have heavy luggage that will cost more money in flight checkin, I would suggest this train. Otherwise, the flight now is so much cheaper it doesn't even make sense to take the bus or train.
Bangkok to Chiang Mai by Train from Bang Sue Train Station
10:22pm - #51 Train, arrive Chiang Mai 12:10pm, sleeper, 3rd class B270 (non sleeper), 2nd class B438, B728 upper deck, B798 lower deck
Loei to Chiang Mai by Bus
From Loei town center, take a tuk-tuk ride to the bus station, B30. There is only one bus station.
As of June 28, 2020 (still on Covid schedule), there are only 3 night trips: 8:30pm, 9:30pm and 12 midnight. 9 hours, B470.
The bus makes the following stops at the following times from a 9pm Loei departure: Phu Ruea (9:50pm), Phitsanulok (12:40am), Uttradit (2:20am), Lampang (4:35am)
Final bus stop is at the Red Bus Arcade, Chiang Mai, 9 hour-trip, arriving 6am (from 9pm Loei departure).
Take a red songthaew to Old City, B50. They'll try to charge you B100, but they'll take B50 (just assure the driver you won't tell the other passengers).
How to Get a 60-Day Thai Tourist Visa and then Extend by another 30 Days
This process is BEFORE Covid 19. Not sure what it is now.
60-Day Thai Tourist Visa
NOTE: There is no need to go back to your country to get the Thai tourist visa. Any major city with a Thai Embassy will do. Apparently there is also no need to have an invitation from a Thai establishment to justify the visa.
Bring the following to the Thai embassy:
a) proof of money (bank statement will suffice)
b) flight booking to Thailand
c) onward flight back to your country from Thailand
d) filled-in tourist visa form
e) 2 passport pictures
f) hotel booking in Thailand (they didn't ask me for this but better be safe)
g) passport with at least 6 months validity
After handing over all the documents, they will ask you to come pick your passport with the visa the following day from 4 to 5pm. That's it!
NOTE: after 2 successful attempts, I was already questioned the 3rd time.
30-Day Extension
NOTE: When your 60-day visa is close to expiry and you want to extend your stay. No need to leave Thailand.
bring the following to the Immigration Office:
a) passport (make sure your Tourist Visa hasn't expired yet)
b) Baht 1900
c) photocopy of your passport + visa duration date stamp + TM6 card (white immigration card) and sign all the copies
d) completed TM7 visa extension form (available at the Immigration Office)
e) one 4cmx6cm passport picture
submit the above to the Front Desk. They will give you a stub with your number on it. Take a seat and wait for your number to be called
when your number is called, your picture will be taken. Then go back to your seat. They will call you again.
when they call you again, they'll give you your passport with your extended visa. That's it!
when there are no lines, the whole process can take only 10 minutes
arrive early - in case there is a snag (visa snag, documentation snag, transport ticket snag, etc.), you will have ample time to troubleshoot the problem if you arrive early (to the airport, to the bus terminal, etc.)
put detailed itinerary on the Calendar apps of your smart-phone according to timelines - this is where you do all your thinking and planning. Once written down, you don't have to think anymore while you are on the journey...you just follow the steps. This frees your mind for something else that might happen while you are already en route
avoiding scams - as a general rule, I ignore the touts or anyone I don't know who call out to me. The calling comes in many forms - "Hi! Where are you from?", "Excuse me! Excuse me!", "Where are you going?". I don't look them in the eye and I remain non-verbal with them. If you reply to them, you just gave them an 'in' to hound you. In order not to look rude, I smile and wave the 'not interested' hand to them, without looking at them.
power bank - hand-carry your power bank. Do not check it in. You can be called in when you are already inside the plane to go all the way to the loading dock so you can personally remove the power bank...and chances are, you'll have to surrender it to them. And you might delay the plane departure!
