abs Saturday ABS Yoga Classes

This is open to the public and not limited to participants of ABS Fitness Challenge

Days: every Saturday beginning Jan 15 to Apr 16, 2022 (3 months)
Times: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm (90 minutes)

Fee: Baht 250/pax
Note: bring your mat, come on time

Jan 29 Class:
The ABS asanas will focus on the obliques and the intercostals this time (isometric/dynamic side planks, weighted side bends, Russian twist), interspersed with HIIT (high intensity interval training - shadow boxing, knee taps, butt kicks, jumping jacks, fast foot shuffle, switching mountain climbers), followed by Wim Hof breathing. Anapana Meditation comes at the end to close the practice.



Jan 22 Class

The ABS asanas will focus on the front abs (abdominus rectus, solar plexus, transversus abdominis - leg raises, crunches, hip raises, boat pose, high plank, Russian twist, seated in&out) but this time, interspersed with HIIT movement, followed by Wim Hof breathing. Chakra Mantra Chanting comes at the end to close the practice.



Jan 15 Class

Class dynamics will consist of sun salutations, pranamyama (Wim Hof, Bhastrika, Kapalabhati, Ujjayi), and standing energy meditation conducted by Shen Shuiying. After yoga class, she will also conduct a free acupuncture talk/demo/hands-on. She is also a qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner.

7 Universal Laws

Matias de Stefano
Matias could be classified as another sage in 'boy next door' clothing. He claims to remember his many lives that span back from thousands of years ago when he was still living on another planet, to his life in Atlantis, and to the time of his later birth in Egypt 12,000 years ago. On top of remembering his past, he also has access to the Akashic Records. He remembers in great detail names, places and dates with remarkable acuity.

The 7 Laws
Matias claims that in whatever time, dimension or space you are in, the universe is governed by these 7 Laws. No one can escape it and it applies to everyone - no exception. When you are in compliance with those laws, you'll realize your full potential.

I list and elaborate on these 7 Laws with my own experience and insight.

7 Universal Laws
  1. Your mind creates reality - on many levels, this seems to be the case. In a more abstract and macro-cosmic sense, our mind creates the entire universe we perceive around us. Our human experience is all perception - like living in a dream. A dream feels real...until you wake up. So, what if this reality is also a dream that we just haven't awakened up from?

    The accomplished yogis, ascendant masters and sages say this - you are not the body, you are not the thoughts, and there is no "I". The only thing that exists, the thing that does not die or get reborn is our consciousness. Perception is there to give us a human experience to learn what we need to learn. In my parlance, without the human experience, we will never taste chocolate.

    Call to action: be careful of what you want to manifest. These intensions are the building blocks of reality. To the extent you want to manifest something, think that it already exists within you and feel the gratitude, feel the joy of having it. FEEL and don't intellectualize. Don't 'wish' for it because it will remain a 'wish' and not a reality.

    Personal share: nearly everything I wished for already happened - even the ones deemed not plausible. Example? At one point in my travels, I thought about living in a hotel where I don't have to pay the daily charges, but don't own it either because I don't want the burden of ownership and attachment. How is that possible? I did not even act on that wish. It existed only in my mind. Now, I'm living in a boutique hotel where the owner (who became a friend) refuses to take my money. I had been here for 3 years now. I can give so many more examples, but it all points to the same thing - the mind creates your reality
  2. As above, so below - whatever happens on the inside, is reflected on the outside. The mind, body, spirit and the rest of the external universe mirror each other. As an oversimplification, if you think negatively, then it won't be surprising if you live a miserable life - it holds true the other way around.

    Call to action: when you work on any aspect of your being, the ripple effect reaches the others - the universe or reality shifts in compliance with it. When you try to get physically fit, the thinking of the mind also improves. As the adage goes, 'sound body, sound mind'. When you work on the spirit by meditating, the body becomes relaxed and the mind becomes still. When you raise your vibration, the universe complies through synchronicity - you meet new people who think similarly, and you lose interest in your previous social circle who remain 'stuck' in their old ways.

    Personal share: with my yoga practice, I am able to still my mind, relax the body and gain emotional solace. All these things are internal actions and internal changes. But what happened in the outside world for me reflects the new changes inside. The world is still in turmoil, but it doesn't ruffle me as much anymore. I still meet assholes, but I see them as actors in life given a role to play - so I should even be glad I wasn't given that role. Again, I am not as ruffled by the externals and I am not as reactive. The bliss within carries out to the bliss outside
  3. Everything is a vibration - 2500 years ago, Buddha said that everything, at its smallest component, is composed of tiny but indivisible 'kalapas' that vibrate at a billion times a second. They arise and drift away in full compliance with the natural law of impermanence. String Theory says the same thing - that the building blocks of matter are a band of vibrating energy called 'strings'. Quantum Mechanics say that everything is a wave, and the only time the wave collapses into a particle is to observe them. Yes, the mere observance of a wave causes it to collapse into a particle as proven by the double-slit experiment.

    Call to action: what if you add feelings, intention and gratitude when you want something to manifest? Wouldn't that exponentially affect how matter comes into being? Until the wave collapses, there are a million probabilities on how it collapses into matter. Intention and gratitude added to mere observance create a greater chance that it manifests into a reality you architectured.

    Personal share: there are many ways I act on reality as a vibration. When I meditate on emptiness, I attempt to dissolve my physical solidity into a mass of vibrations...arising and passing away, in compliance with the law of impermanence. This practice allows me to remain detached from everything, acknowledging that everything is impermanent...marriages, relationships, wealth, health, etc. When you lose something precious, it's not as devastating.
  4. Opposites are the Same - think of 2 opposites belonging to only one broad spectrum. Example - a stick. On one end of the stick is pure black, and on the other end, it's pure white. In between, you get a varying shade of gray. If you are an ant and you are only on the black part, you will think the stick is black - same thing if you were on the white part. Realization? It's the same stick - there is no duality.

    Call to action: this calls not for a physical action but of understanding and acceptance - that the happiness we enjoy comes with sadness too. They are 2 sides to the same coin. Thus, we have to go through both processes to fulfill our human experience to learn what we need to learn in this existence. When we can accept this, we no longer fight with life, knowing that what happens, need to happen - good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant. Moreover, the nasty things need to happen to clear clutter and make space for bigger manifesting to take place.

    Personal share: at a time when I was going through a nasty divorce, I got fired. It felt like the end of the world. I felt betrayed by my benevolent universe. But by being fired, I received a severance pay amounting to my personal loan - CAN$22,000. Overnight, my 4-year loan was miraculously paid. Only then did I realize that I had to be fired to realize my loan repayment - that my universe was simply at work in a way I did not understand. So, a 'bad thing' is not really a bad thing. The good and the bad work together towards a common goal - your well-being
  5. Everything flows - there is a perfect time for things to happen. That's why there is a planting season, a harvesting season, a high tide, and a low tide.

    Call to action: this may not be instinctive at first, but learn to act when the timing is right. The more aware you are about things, the clearer it becomes when it's time to act. Sometimes, it's even best not to act on it - because it was never meant to be. When your timing is right, you don't struggle anymore - you simply go with the flow, and all the energy needed to make things happen is already right behind you, like a surfer finding his big wave. Just let go and swim with the flow

    Personal share: as a traveler, I used to plan for everything - where to go, what mode of transport, where to sleep, etc. Sometimes, they don't go as planned. If I let go and let things happen, I end up in a much better situation. The universe has an intelligence that steers you on the right path...if you let it.
  6. Cause and effect - this is essentially the law of karma. This phenomenon is self-explanatory when you just observe reality. Anything that is happening now was caused by something. And whatever happens now will be the cause of the effects it will manifest.

    Call to action: if you believe that good things beget good things, then do good things because it will only produce good effects - and vice versa. Do a good deed today, and perhaps in the future, that good will be reciprocated by something good. Harm someone today, and when that victim comes to a position of power, that harm can come back to you 10-fold. But forget about keeping tabs or doing things for the reward. Just do good things instead of bad because doing something good is already its own reward. Besides, doing something bad is just as difficult or just as easy as doing something good. So why not play it safe and do good things at all times?

    Personal share: some of my best friends now are the ones who did me a big and unsolicited favor in the past. I acknowledge the good deed they did to me and I keep them into my fold, protective of their person and their interest.
  7. Everything has a gender - gender pervades reality. Even in a female body, the 2 side nadis (energy channels) are the female ida and the male pingala. Yoga has a masculine yang yoga and a feminine yin yoga. A male body can have female traits in him - tenderness, compassion and forgiveness

    Call to action: since I'm a man, I will simply say I treat a woman equally the same way I would treat a man - humanity is humanity, whatever gender

    Personal share: personally, I struggle with this as a universal law. As a human being, being alive on this planet, I see the roles gender play. But to say that gender is present in everything in this wide universe? I still have to come to an understanding of that.

    But as far as personal share goes, when I became a father to 2 lovely girls, I began to see the world through a females' eyes and realized it wasn't a level playing field. I try to do my best and step forward and be heard about gender equality. One such case was calling out mountain biking legend, Brian Lopes, whose comments about female riders were misogynistic.

Ending Thoughts
By being mindful about life, how things unfold, by knowing myself more, I've come to conclude that the universe exists for one reason alone - to serve your interest, but only if you allow it to. It's the most formidable ally you could possibly get. In my parlance, the power that created the Big Bang is on your side. But how do you allow the universe to serve your interest? There are many ways, and one of them is to stay compliant with these 7 laws.

Chiang Mai FYI / Tips
  • crop-burning season in Chiang Mai is between late Feb to early April. But laws change everytime. This year, 2019, there is a 61-day ban on burning so the farmers started burning early. When my plane was approaching Chiang Mai on Jan 24, 2019, there was already a thick blanket of smog covering the entire city (and beyond). But within the city itself, you won't feel it (but that doesn't mean the air is healthy). To monitor air conditions in real time, refer to site: Chiang Mai Air Pollution: Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI)
  • hot season begins March and lasts until June
  • wet season begins July and lasts until September
  • best time to visit Chiang Mai is mid-September to mid-February - after the monsoon and before the burning
  • you have to try Khao Soi, this is north Thailand's culinary staple
  • the tourist area where most of the hotels, restaurants, ticket offices, tour operators are, is located in the Old City
  • to exchange your dollars to Thai Baht, the Super Rich Money Exchange give the best rates. There are many branches scattered around Chiang Mai
  • get a red cab (songthao) outside the train station for Baht 50 (instead of paying B100 if inside the train station) to Old City - if you haggle nicely enough...I did!
  • shared red taxi (songthao) - B30 standard fare plying all over Old City
  • for only B50/day, best to rent a bike to go around the Old City - it's a 2.5km2 with lots to discover
  • FREE daily yoga classes from 9:00am to 10:15am at Nong Buak Hard Park (southwest corner of Old City). Resident and passing-through teachers take turns conducting yoga classes.

Loei to Chiang Mai by Bus
  1. From Loei town center, take a tuk-tuk ride to the bus station, B30. There is only one bus station.
  2. As of June 28, 2020 (still on Covid schedule), there are only 3 night trips: 8:30pm, 9:30pm and 12 midnight. 9 hours, B470.
  3. The bus makes the following stops at the following times from a 9pm Loei departure: Phu Ruea (9:50pm), Phitsanulok (12:40am), Uttradit (2:20am), Lampang (4:35am)
  4. Final bus stop is at the Red Bus Arcade, Chiang Mai, 9 hour-trip, arriving 6am (from 9pm Loei departure).
  5. Take a red songthaew to Old City, B50. They'll try to charge you B100, but they'll take B50 (just assure the driver you won't tell the other passengers).

Travel Tips for Thailand

How to Get a 60-Day Thai Tourist Visa and then Extend by another 30 Days

This process is BEFORE Covid 19. Not sure what it is now.

    60-Day Thai Tourist Visa

    NOTE: There is no need to go back to your country to get the Thai tourist visa. Any major city with a Thai Embassy will do. Apparently there is also no need to have an invitation from a Thai establishment to justify the visa.

  1. Bring the following to the Thai embassy:
    a) proof of money (bank statement will suffice)
    b) flight booking to Thailand
    c) onward flight back to your country from Thailand
    d) filled-in tourist visa form
    e) 2 passport pictures
    f) hotel booking in Thailand (they didn't ask me for this but better be safe)
    g) passport with at least 6 months validity
  2. After handing over all the documents, they will ask you to come pick your passport with the visa the following day from 4 to 5pm. That's it!
  3. NOTE: after 2 successful attempts, I was already questioned the 3rd time.

    30-Day Extension

    NOTE: When your 60-day visa is close to expiry and you want to extend your stay. No need to leave Thailand.

  1. bring the following to the Immigration Office:
    a) passport (make sure your Tourist Visa hasn't expired yet)
    b) Baht 1900
    c) photocopy of your passport + visa duration date stamp + TM6 card (white immigration card) and sign all the copies
    d) completed TM7 visa extension form (available at the Immigration Office)
    e) one 4cmx6cm passport picture
  2. submit the above to the Front Desk. They will give you a stub with your number on it. Take a seat and wait for your number to be called
  3. when your number is called, your picture will be taken. Then go back to your seat. They will call you again.
  4. when they call you again, they'll give you your passport with your extended visa. That's it!
  5. when there are no lines, the whole process can take only 10 minutes

General Travel Tips
  1. arrive early - in case there is a snag (visa snag, documentation snag, transport ticket snag, etc.), you will have ample time to troubleshoot the problem if you arrive early (to the airport, to the bus terminal, etc.)
  2. put detailed itinerary on the Calendar apps of your smart-phone according to timelines - this is where you do all your thinking and planning. Once written down, you don't have to think anymore while you are on the journey...you just follow the steps. This frees your mind for something else that might happen while you are already en route
  3. avoiding scams - as a general rule, I ignore the touts or anyone I don't know who call out to me. The calling comes in many forms - "Hi! Where are you from?", "Excuse me! Excuse me!", "Where are you going?". I don't look them in the eye and I remain non-verbal with them. If you reply to them, you just gave them an 'in' to hound you. In order not to look rude, I smile and wave the 'not interested' hand to them, without looking at them.
  4. power bank - hand-carry your power bank. Do not check it in. You can be called in when you are already inside the plane to go all the way to the loading dock so you can personally remove the power bank...and chances are, you'll have to surrender it to them. And you might delay the plane departure!
