Background Story Captain Fantastic was supposed to be the feature movie on our monthly Movie Night, but the meeting ended up with consciousness-talk with no movie.
This movie was requested by one of the mems who wanted to hear what our thoughts are about the movie. Apparently, viewers are polarized about this movie. It is with that intention that I viewed the movie on my own. Maybe this mem gets to read this review and gets a sense of what my thoughts are.
Synopsis Captain Fantastic is about a family who lived off-the-grid until they were constrained to come back to the default world for the mother's burial. The kids are introduced to this seemingly contrasting world. Some had to face tough choices.
Acting Vigo was very subdued with his acting but very effective. He skillfully played the tight-wire act of being a loving father, a heartless drill sergeant, and a human being. I'm singling him out, but everybody played their roles competently. If someone didn't, he/she would stick out like a sore thumb in the movie - but that didn't happen.
Being Off-The-Grid This off-the-grid theme is becoming more relevant and compelling. It's gaining traction as society becomes increasingly disillusioned by what Big Brother is really doing. The backlash is evidenced by preppers, intentional communities and those who wish to live off the land by having enough landspace for family-sized agriculture. Since most of the food are GMO-ed, demineralized water being flourinated, chemtrails polluting the air we breathe - we are made weaker by a thousand cuts. There is a strong push for self-reliance or community-subsistence.
Quotes There were a few powerful verbal passages in the film:
"I know nothing if it's not in a book!" -- the eldest son complaining to his Dad when the son realized that everything he knows about the world is what he learned from the books he's read. In short, he's completely oblivious to what's out there.
"...our children will be philosopher kings" -- contained in the mother's letter to her mother about life off-the-grid for her family
"...the cavalry is not coming" -- the Dad to his son who injured his hand while rock climbing in the rain. It means the son was on his own to save himself.
Engagement I was completely captured for the most part of the movie. At times I'd notice I'm welling up. But that's until they insert a clever 'out of place' scene that puts the 'off-the-grid' lifestyle in bad light. Moreover, it offends and actually ruins the flow of the movie.
Sleight of Hand Sabotage I strongly felt a malicious bias against this movie by the producers. It was done with a stealthy hand. That's right - it was made to fail despite the somewhat 'ok' ending. It was presented as a utopian paradise for a family, but outlandish and unnecessary insertions were made in the movie to make it look bad - which is perhaps why the movie is polarizing to a lot of people. If you're not vigilant or aware, you wouldn't even notice it:
they stole groceries - despite the idealist jargon against a capitalistic system of free enterprise, they resorted to stealing groceries. This inconsistency was definitely out of place.
making a grand entrance on the funeral mass - yes, in the middle of a solemn mass, they just barged in like the Marvel Avengers dressed like colorful clowns and disrupted the ceremony. Again, if you want this family lifestyle to look bad, insert a scene like this where they look like clowns and oblivious to social decorum. Outlandishly out of place!
digging up a grave - sure, the Mom wanted to be cremated, but digging up a grave in the middle of the night? C'mon!
climbing the roof to rescue someone who didn't want to be rescued - and this resulted in an accident. Of course the father has to be blamed for all this. Again, this scene was out of place, reckless and done with malicious intent.
Vigo comes out of his camp trailer with his dick hanging out - an elderly couple passes by, and Vigo says, "It's only a dick." If you want to call attention or rock the boat, yes, you do shit like this. You can be a nudist and still be discreet, not vulgar. I have nudist friends too, but you don't see their tits/dicks being paraded in public. Again, over the top and unneccessary.
Ending Thoughts
Sabotage I have this lingering suspicion that the producers wanted to fake a utopian reality here. This was an establishment film made to cast a bad light on anyone against the established order - despite the 'ok' ending.
Was It Unfair to Remove the kids from Society? I guess this is the polarizing crux of the movie. I have to defer back to the American Indians - they live life with nature, in compliance with the natural laws, and deal with whatever it takes to survive. Everyone's down with that. But because the family is white, it's an issue.
But on another take, if the kids were meant to go back to society at one point, then it's not fair to have them live their lives in complete isolation. They should be straddling both worlds.
Was It Child Abuse? This is a touchy one and again, polarizing. Was it cruel for the kids to undergo such extreme austerity, training and schooling? To be in that kind of environment, the kids were getting exactly the training they needed. I think the controversy stems from the family being white. Native American Indians live life that way for everyone in the family. Perhaps it's even harsher. But no one cries child abuse.
But I admire the training the kids were having - the rock climbing, the hunting/gathering for food, the fitness workout, the home schooling, the hardcore austerity, etc. I'm totally down with that. That's exactly the kind of training they need to survive.
I think it's not about what was shown in the film. I think it's more about what's not seen - like perhaps the Dad being tender when training is over. He was not authoritarian unless he had to - obviously, he loved them. The kids had full liberties to express themselves. They all had a voice. The film implied, more than expressed, that the Dad had balance to his ways. The filmmakers should have put equal weight on that as well.
If I were the Dad Being off-the-grid is a little too extreme for me. Ideally, I'd like to have one foot within society and the other off-the-grid. It doesn't have to be a choice. You can enjoy the best of both worlds. Let's face it - maybe only 1 out of a thousand is actually willing to cut off ties with civilization to live an isolated and secluded life in the forest.
If I were the Dad, I would make the kids proficient in both worlds - a Tarzan when they live in the forest and popular social media influencers(expanding public consciousness) when they live in polite society. That's right, they oscillate between the 2 worlds, and excel in both of them. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
I have long imagined a Tarzan who is lord of the jungle but a proper Lord in British society. Yes, a Tarzan who spans a very broad spectrum.
Or a seeker who meditates in a cave for 3 years under the very strict Tibetan retreat tradition, and when he comes out, he wears his colors and rides his badass Harley into the sunset.
See the Move
Altogether, it was a good film. Maybe this 'sabotage' thing I talk about is nothing but badly contrived comedy to generate a laugh. Maybe I was overthinking this. Anyway, I would still recommend this movie. Go see it. You have a strong opinion? Comment on it.
(Sep 22, 2022) I'd been soaking up talks, podcasts and interviews about A.I.(artificial intelligence). More specifically, I'd been in debates about the Google Lamda conversation with Blake Lemoine(Google's QA on A.I. bias) where Blake was drawn to conclude that Lamda has now become sentient. But is the question even relevant to begin with?....more »»
(November 30, 2023) This is a documentary series with 13 episodes narrating the historical events from the tax revolt by the British colonies in America that morphed into a fight for independence, and finally the founding of a nation. This gave a 3-dimensional narrative of the whole struggle - heroes, the unsung heroes, the gallantry, the betrayal, the egoistical pursuit of glory, the idealism, internal conflict, etc...more »»

Chiang Mai FYI / Tips
crop-burning season in Chiang Mai is between late Feb to early April. But laws change everytime. This year, 2019, there is a 61-day ban on burning so the farmers started burning early. When my plane was approaching Chiang Mai on Jan 24, 2019, there was already a thick blanket of smog covering the entire city (and beyond). But within the city itself, you won't feel it (but that doesn't mean the air is healthy). To monitor air conditions in real time, refer to site: Chiang Mai Air Pollution: Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI)
hot season begins March and lasts until June
wet season begins July and lasts until September
best time to visit Chiang Mai is mid-September to mid-February - after the monsoon and before the burning
you have to try Khao Soi, this is north Thailand's culinary staple

B273 #51 sleeping train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Book Online - direct booking with State Railway of Thailand. Best to register first. If going to BKK from CNX, click "Northern Line".
note -- big difference between booking direct with the State Railway and booking with an online 3rd party agent. 12GO was charging B1330 for the same trip that only cost me B941 with the State Railway.
note -- Oct 2022, I took the #10 Train from CNX to BKK, upper berth, 2nd class, a/c, sleeper, B941. The train was clean, fast, comfortable and modern. If you have heavy luggage that will cost more money in flight checkin, I would suggest this train. Otherwise, the flight now is so much cheaper it doesn't even make sense to take the bus or train.
Bangkok to Chiang Mai by Train from Bang Sue Train Station
10:22pm - #51 Train, arrive Chiang Mai 12:10pm, sleeper, 3rd class B270 (non sleeper), 2nd class B438, B728 upper deck, B798 lower deck

As of June 28, 2020 (still on Covid schedule), there are only 3 night trips: 8:30pm, 9:30pm and 12 midnight. 9 hours, B470.
The bus makes the following stops at the following times from a 9pm Loei departure: Phu Ruea (9:50pm), Phitsanulok (12:40am), Uttradit (2:20am), Lampang (4:35am)
Final bus stop is at the Red Bus Arcade, Chiang Mai, 9 hour-trip, arriving 6am (from 9pm Loei departure).
Take a red songthaew to Old City, B50. They'll try to charge you B100, but they'll take B50 (just assure the driver you won't tell the other passengers).
How to Get a 60-Day Thai Tourist Visa and then Extend by another 30 Days
This process is BEFORE Covid 19. Not sure what it is now.
60-Day Thai Tourist Visa
NOTE: There is no need to go back to your country to get the Thai tourist visa. Any major city with a Thai Embassy will do. Apparently there is also no need to have an invitation from a Thai establishment to justify the visa.
Bring the following to the Thai embassy:
a) proof of money (bank statement will suffice)
b) flight booking to Thailand
c) onward flight back to your country from Thailand
d) filled-in tourist visa form
e) 2 passport pictures
f) hotel booking in Thailand (they didn't ask me for this but better be safe)
g) passport with at least 6 months validity
After handing over all the documents, they will ask you to come pick your passport with the visa the following day from 4 to 5pm. That's it!
NOTE: after 2 successful attempts, I was already questioned the 3rd time.
30-Day Extension
NOTE: When your 60-day visa is close to expiry and you want to extend your stay. No need to leave Thailand.
bring the following to the Immigration Office:
a) passport (make sure your Tourist Visa hasn't expired yet)
b) Baht 1900
c) photocopy of your passport + visa duration date stamp + TM6 card (white immigration card) and sign all the copies
d) completed TM7 visa extension form (available at the Immigration Office)
e) one 4cmx6cm passport picture
submit the above to the Front Desk. They will give you a stub with your number on it. Take a seat and wait for your number to be called
when your number is called, your picture will be taken. Then go back to your seat. They will call you again.
when they call you again, they'll give you your passport with your extended visa. That's it!
when there are no lines, the whole process can take only 10 minutes
