Dawata Yoga Studio Celebrates 1st Anniversary

Location Google Map: Dawata Yoga Studio, Cebu City, Philippines

Pre-Plandemic Yoga Scene
Pre-plandemic, when yoga was at its peak in Cebu (2015?), I counted over 20 yoga studios with Yoga Hub topping the food chain - other notables were Surya Nanda, Studio 108, Dragon Fly, Love Yoga World, etc.

With the onslaught of 'Covid' and an equally catastrophic combination-punch of Typhoon Odette, the yoga scene was decimated with remnants of its former glory as abandoned commercial spaces - YogaHub being one of the casualties (Love Yoga World remained standing). It would have been heart-wrenching for me to witness it. Perhaps it was blessing-in-disguise that I was in Chiang Mai when it all happened.

The Phoenix Rising Above the Ashes
Lo and behold, from a post-plandemic void, Dawata sets up shop amidst all the unpredictability and apprehension arising from a precarious new-normal. It took nerve, commitment, and trust in the divine to make such leap of faith. With a clear vision, no-delay execution and nourishment of a growing community in search of yogic refuge, everything amalgamated into what I would call a Dawata-emergence. It took many variables working in synchronicity to come up with this convergence.

An Open Paradigm
What I find interesting in the way yoga is morphing in this post-plandemic stage, is that people are now open to a yoga-fusion. It used to be frowned upon to mix yoga with anything outside its tradition. But Dawata's thinking is not subject to such confines. There is HIIT, Bachata, Fly and other disciplines mixed-in with yoga.

Personally, I'm totally down with that. Yoga was never meant to be a comprehensive full-body workout. There are missing components to it - cardiovascular endurance, lats development, muscle mass definition, explosive power, etc.

For as long as the underlying principles of yoga are present in any activity outside its tradition - honoring the safety edge, synchronicity with breath, mindful execution, non-reaction, intentioned practice, gratitude to the divine, etc....then who is to say it's not yoga?

Ending Thoughts
I'm still an outsider-looking-in, grateful that I am somehow accommodated within the community's fringes. It's amazing that in one year, from scratch, Dawata was able to grow into a nexus for Cebu City's growing and awaiting yoga community. It has continually grown into a bigger space and galvanized its devoted community to take yoga as a way of life. It doesn't end here. Dawata has projects lined-up in the coming year to offer a more meaningful experience to its growing members who can't wait for new beginnings.

More on Cebu City:

About Cebu City
  • Cebu City is the 2nd biggest city in the Philippine (next to Manila) - and it continues to build and expand. Traffic is getting bad. Decentralization is being developed with the SM Super Mall in the SRP south and the suburban towns in the north.
  • Boat from the airport to the city center - even without traffic, it takes about 4 rides to reach the city. But with Cebu's increasing traffic congestion, it has become a nightmare. Instead of taking the land route, take the water route - no traffic, fresher air and cheaper. From the airport, take the yellow multi-cab straight to the river port and take the ferry (there's only one destination) to the city. Take the 02B jeep and get off at UC near Jones - you're now on the city's main artery.
  • given its size and increasing congestion, Cebu really needs a mass railway system - something that is conspicuously lacking, but no one seems to complain about
  • Cebu is bursting at the seams on the yoga scene. There are about 20 yoga centers in the city - from yoga studios to gyms offering yoga and hotels jumping on the bandwagon
  • a trendy and safe place in Cebu where you can chillout for coffee and enjoy good eats would be at the Ayala Mall
  • there are other pocket-areas for trendy hangouts - Banila Town Center, Crossroads, Escario Plaza, La Vie, etc.
  • the tourist area where most of the budget hotels and restaurants are, are located within the Mango area, although it has a seedy belly feel. Kids may swarm on you pretending to be begging, but they could be picking your pocket or your backpack pockets - be careful
  • many pick-pockets in the Colon area - be careful
