Lalique and the Lily's Peanut Butter Glass Jar
Location: Cebu City, Cebu (province), Philippines
Everyday Lalique When I was still living in New York, I met a Filipino doctor who lived life's elegant pleasures. For his everyday glassware, he uses Lalique. Just to put things in perspective, Lalique is a highly prized glass art piece that you see displayed behind thick alarm-triggered glass panes in some of the most prestigious museums in some of the world's renowned capitals. Fetching a dizzying auction price tag of $56,673 for a vase, that's Lalique for you. I could see the doctor's profound joy in his Lalique indulgence. I dare not ask if he has ever broken one while dishwashing it.
Lily's Peanut Butter A far cry from the haute lifestyle of the Lalique crowd in this part of the hemisphere, I purchased a glass jar of Lily's Peanut Butter that is soon to be empty. Mind you, it's not a bottle, but a glass jar. I paid less than P100 (~$2.00) for it. Apart from enjoying the peanut butter itself, which I use in many creative ways (coffee with peanut butter = Choc-Nut flavored coffee!), I was full of eager anticipation about finally emptying the glass jar so I can use it as a utilitarian glass - for drinking water, for my cup of coffee, and with its tin cover, I can also use it to store nuts, M&M and raisins. Every morsel of consumption brought me closer to the day the glass jar would be empty. It was like counting the days 'til Christmas.
Ending Thoughts The high-brow Lalique vs the spartan Lily's Peanut Butter glass jar. They cover the extreme ends of the glass spectrum. The doctor and I got the same giddy excitement from a widely disparate price point. To me, hands down, it's no contest - my glass jar came with peanut butter and a tin cover (Lalique had no freebie!). I can wash it in full abandon and I can even give it away when I pack up for a new destination. It's not about the price tag. To someone who owns nothing and has nothing, life's little pleasure goes a much longer way.
