In Siquijor, May has a lot of festivities with most of the municipalities celebrating the town fiesta. But on top of that, there are weddings, birthdays and events calling for a celebration. The Siquijodnons know how to celebrate! Apart from food and revelry, there are other places worthy of an exploration.
Marlon's Wedding and Birthday
Marlon's Wedding (May 8, 2023) May was a big month for Marlon - he'll get married and celebrate his birthday. The bride would be coming in from Canada, tie the knot, and head back to Canada - all in a matter of maybe 2 weeks? Marlon, according to plan, will follow the bride in Canada. This may take years though.
with the newly wed, Marlon and Marichu
Extravagance I thought it would be a simple "I do" with a modest reception. I was in for a surprise! I counted 4 whole lechons, a whole cow was made into different viands, live singers were hired, the event was catered, there was a stage with lights and sound technicians, a short full production movie was shot of the couple (a level-up from a pre-nup pictorial) and most of all, the whole town was invited!
The venue, to accomodate everyone, was held at the barangay hall. Any one can come. And everyone did. From the throng of people waiting and lurking outside, I was somehow nervous of a food stampede. Privately, I asked how much it all cost - around P500,000. That's a lot of tuba!
Marlon's Birthday (May 22, 2023) When his bride left for Canada, it was time for his birthday! Of course, it's another celebration. His big goat was slaughtered and people came in the evening. I was there lunch time during the preparation and at night for the main event. Food was over flowing, as can be expected. This time though, invitees only.
noontime preparation with Marlon, Ricky and Manyo
November Fiesta Without reprieve yet from all the celebration and expenses, in November, just a few months away, it would be fiesta in his barangay. He planned to buy a piglet that would be big enough for the festivity.
Kawasan Falls and Cave
Exploring the Waterfalls of Lazi (May 23, 2023) My water-play of choice is hands-down, Bolo Bolo Spring. But I'm still curious to what lies within the island, especially Lazi. There are a number of water-destinations still on my list and one of them is Kawasan Falls. This waterfall, as I see it on Google Map, is along the river where you also find Lagaan Falls and Locong Falls. Kawasan though is upstream from both.
Kawasan Falls The place was deserted except for one or 2 guides. It was mandatory to get one but on a donation basis. Like Cambugahay Falls, the flight of steps down was long and challenging. But this place isn't as developed and can be dangerous with the deep steps with slippery and unstable rocks. For someone not fit, a guide is a good idea.
slippery slope going down
The falls itself looks very similar to its cousins along the river, Lagaan and Locong Falls. It would seem like a minor Cambugahay Falls. The water was cool and refreshing.
alone at Kawasan Falls and cave
Kawasan Cave The cave is underneath the falls. It goes about 15 feet inside as you swim through the water. I didn't really go inside without my dive mask. It looked dark and eerie.
Alone I didn't want my guide to just wait idle for me. I gave him P30 and asked him to leave me alone. He went back up. Alone, instead of feeling free to frolic and play, it felt creepy. I tried to brush it off but the eerie feeling lingered. I didn't stay long. It felt weird. In Bolo Bolo, even alone, I felt at ease. Not here in Kawasan Falls.
It Claimed Lives When I talked to Manang Inday(an elderly lady who sells tuba) about the eerie feeling I got, she immediately said that Kawasan has already claimed lives. Hmmm...maybe the feeling I got was a warning. Another Manang told me Kawasan has already claimed 2 lives.
Ending Thoughts I'm glad I heeded the call to safety. If there are elementals residing at Kawasan and they want privacy, I can respect that.
At this point, I don't feel the need to explore other water destinations - I think I've seen enough. I'm really happy with Bolo Bolo Spring - for bathing, rinsing laundry and potable water. Next, I default to Cambugahay Falls for socials with travelers and also if I want to stay a little longer in the water - Bolo Bolo gets too cold after a few minutes.
Altogether, Lazi is blessed to have so many water features. I'm grateful to call this place home.
Ending Thoughts May has been a gastronomic indulgence. Imagine if this happens every month!
(June 14, 2023) While doing my Trataka shatkriya, I had an Aha Moment. In Hemi-Sync, you synchronize the left and the right brain hemiphere by making you hear a sound that does not exist . What if you make your eyes see something that does not exist as well? What benefit can you get from it? I'm coining a name for this new technique - Trataka Mirage...more »»
More on Lazi:
Lazi Local Info
Resorts - Lazi has some beach/dive resorts on its west coast - Gabayan Riviera, Lazi Beach Club, Bahura Dive Resort. However, the popular area for tourist resorts are in San Juan
Transport - Lazi is the junction where the jeeps begin their clockwise route (Lazi-San Juan-Siquijor Port) or the counter clockwise route (Lazi-Maria-Larena Port). Because the jeeps are rare with about 2 to 3 trips/day only in the morning, it's practical to just have a motorcycle here in Siquijor. With its affordability (a brand new Rusi motorbike is as low as P45k), people just buy motorcycles...especially those who live up in the mountains.
The Boulevard - Lazi's main draw is its seaside cobblestone promenade. When the sun goes down, people gather here for eats, drinks, open-air, harbor view and the sunset
Lazi Port - Kho Shipping, the shipping line operating from Lazi Port, has stopped its service to Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Dumaguete, Tagbilaran and Cebu. Passengers can go to Siquijor Port or Larena Port for boat services out of Siquijor Island

Lite Ferries - at Larena Port, T-Th-Sun, 2:00 am, 5 hours, PHP?
Siquijor - Cebu (Liloan) - Cebu City BUS Trip(as of Jan 2023)
There is only one bus plying this route - Sugbo Urban. Tourist class coach, a/c, comfortable, Sun-Fri (these dates keep changing). P420 for bus, P275 for ferry to Liloan. Larena Port around 5 am, makes a clockwise roundtrip around Siquijor Island - Larena, Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi (stops at Lazi market for breakfast and leaves 6:50 am), San Juan, Siquijor (arrives 8am, P50 from Lazi to Siquijor Poblacion) and catches the 1pm ferry at Larena Port (Sundays at 3 pm) for Liloan, Cebu and resumes its land route. Arrives Cebu City (South Bus Terminal) 10 pm.
Sugbo Urban is the cheapest and most convenient way because it goes around the island (clockwise) along the circumferential road, passing through - Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi, San Juan, Siquijor...and back to Larena where it takes the ferry at 1 pm. This saves you the hassle and high transport cost of a tricycle. Besides, it's a long trip from the other side of the island to be taking by tricycle.
