What is Trataka? In yoga, Trataka is one of the 6 purification processes (Shat kriya) where you fix your gaze on one spot that does not move. You don't blink. Your eyes will feel like burning until tears run off your face. This cleanses and moisturizes the eyes and somewhat restores it back to optimum functionality. Yoga says that once you perfect the regular practice of Trataka, you'll never experience any eye problem no matter what age.
Trataka has always been a part of my practice. Lately however, with my waning eyesight due to the aging process, my vision is increasingly being challenged. I had been doubling down on this practice.
An Aha Moment While doing my Trataka shatkriya, I had an Aha Moment. In Hemi-Sync, you synchronize the left and the right brain hemiphere by making you hear a sound that does not exist (binaural beats). What if you make your eyes see something that does not exist as well by synchronizing where you focus your 2 eyes? I'm coining a name for this new technique - Trataka Mirage.
Technique I've done this before, many times, but not as a Shat kriya but more of visual therapy.
2 candles - light up 2 candles of the same height and place it about a meter apart from each other.
Siddhasa - since this is yoga, sit in Siddhasana or Padmasana, about 10 feet away from the 2 candles
Drishti (gaze) - this is where it gets tricky. You have to focus your eyesight on a blank space between you and the 2 candles where these 2 candles are along the lines of sight. While the focus of the eyes is on that blank space, the focus of the mind is on the background candles. You will begin to see the 2 candles become closer until they merge. You have to hold that focus or the merging breaks. Best to see the illustration.
Tips - wear headphones and listen to an audio file of OM chanting...and follow the chant. When you tear up and you close your eyes, transition into Sambhavi mudra and continue chanting, but this time, redirect your focus on the 3rd Eye.
creating a third and imaginary candle from the 2 adjacent candles
Minor Benefits There are a few obvious benefits but the main benefit that I'm thinking is speculative. I have NOT read anything about creating an imaginary image to focus your Trataka shatkriya/meditation on.
Enhanced concentration - the moment you lose your focus, the mirage disappears. So you really need to stay focused the entire time.
Pratyahara in action - because you are intently focused to keep the mirage from disappearing, you essentially shut your doors to the outside world.
Main but Speculative Benefit In a binaural beat, the brain is forced to create a new sound that does not exist. This causes the brain hemispheres to be in sync, enhancing cognitive abilities, increasing creativity, and inducing an altered state of consciousness. The operative word being, "the mind is forced to create something that does not exist".
In Trataka Mirage, the same thing - the brain is forced to see an imaginary image that does not exist. This is even more challenging because it requires constant focus or the mirage disappears (in binaural beats, all you have to do is listen. No effort is required). Effect? I don't know. Maybe it likewise sychronizes the left and right brain hemispheres, maybe it activates the Ajna chakra, maybe it wakes up the pineal gland, maybe it strengthens the eye muscles. Lots of maybes. I'm just following my Aha Moment. Usually, there's a reason for this epiphany.
Ending Thoughts Since my eyesight is constantly challenged, Trataka will always be a staple. And with Trataka, this new technique will always be adhered to. I'll keep an update on any develop I discover about this.
(June 25, 2023) I first stumbled upon Sri M while watching the TRS Clips Podcast. I thought he was a fascinating man with an interesting story to tell and a profound insight to share. For a week or so, I was just listening to interviews of him...more »»

More on Lazi:
Lazi Local Info
Resorts - Lazi has some beach/dive resorts on its west coast - Gabayan Riviera, Lazi Beach Club, Bahura Dive Resort. However, the popular area for tourist resorts are in San Juan
Transport - Lazi is the junction where the jeeps begin their clockwise route (Lazi-San Juan-Siquijor Port) or the counter clockwise route (Lazi-Maria-Larena Port). Because the jeeps are rare with about 2 to 3 trips/day only in the morning, it's practical to just have a motorcycle here in Siquijor. With its affordability (a brand new Rusi motorbike is as low as P45k), people just buy motorcycles...especially those who live up in the mountains.
The Boulevard - Lazi's main draw is its seaside cobblestone promenade. When the sun goes down, people gather here for eats, drinks, open-air, harbor view and the sunset
Lazi Port - Kho Shipping, the shipping line operating from Lazi Port, has stopped its service to Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Dumaguete, Tagbilaran and Cebu. Passengers can go to Siquijor Port or Larena Port for boat services out of Siquijor Island

Lite Ferries - at Larena Port, T-Th-Sun, 2:00 am, 5 hours, PHP?
Siquijor - Cebu (Liloan) - Cebu City BUS Trip(as of Jan 2023)
There is only one bus plying this route - Sugbo Urban. Tourist class coach, a/c, comfortable, Sun-Fri (these dates keep changing). P420 for bus, P275 for ferry to Liloan. Larena Port around 5 am, makes a clockwise roundtrip around Siquijor Island - Larena, Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi (stops at Lazi market for breakfast and leaves 6:50 am), San Juan, Siquijor (arrives 8am, P50 from Lazi to Siquijor Poblacion) and catches the 1pm ferry at Larena Port (Sundays at 3 pm) for Liloan, Cebu and resumes its land route. Arrives Cebu City (South Bus Terminal) 10 pm.
Sugbo Urban is the cheapest and most convenient way because it goes around the island (clockwise) along the circumferential road, passing through - Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi, San Juan, Siquijor...and back to Larena where it takes the ferry at 1 pm. This saves you the hassle and high transport cost of a tricycle. Besides, it's a long trip from the other side of the island to be taking by tricycle.
