Into the Realm of Jiu-jitsu Dec 5, 2015

Into the Realm of Jiu-jitsu

Jiu-jitsu and Spirituality
I first heard of Jiu-jitsu back in the early days of UFC when Royce Gracie dominated the Octagon. I've always been curious. Royce wasn't exceptionally built like the WWF types, but he pinned down and reduced to submission bigger guys than him. He would wrap around his opponent and methodically lynch him to submission. What's the magic of Jiu-jitsu? When I talked to Firoz at his Firozian Restaurant the other day, he told me that after 4 years practising Jiu-jitsu, the spiritual side of the martial arts was revealing itself to him. That got my attention. He invited me to a complimentary class. I couldn't say no.

What is Jiu-jitsu?
Jiu-jitsu is a form of grappling martial arts that has evolved into a combat sport and gained popularity through the triumph of the Gracies in the early days of the UFC. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu evolved into its own art through the innovations and adaptation of judo through Carlos and Helio Gracie. To date, Jiu-jitsu is a global phenomenon.

Keeno
I didn't know Keeno would be the teacher. I first met him when I taught a few yoga classed at Icom a year ago where he was then employed. Him and his office buddies even treated me to dinner on my last day in Cebu before I took on what ended up as a 9-month backpacking of Southeast Asia. It was welcoming to see him again, this time, with me as the student.

Class of 15
Including Keeno, the class was 15-strong, including advanced practitioners preparing for the competition in Manila this January. There were a few newbies as well, but I was the newest of the newbies. The warm-up alone winded me up, but thanks to my yoga practice, I managed to keep up with the guys.

Jiu-jitsu and Yoga
I was taught 2 techniques on how to dominate when I'm pinned down. One was the Kimura. The myriad of precision moves somehow utilized a lot of my yoga poses. As Firoz himself stated, Jiu-jitsu is a combat application of some yoga asanas.

Sparring
I sparred with Joem, a seasoned practitioner, who was patient with me and gave me many opportunities to apply what I just learned - that was cool! The next guy I sparred with gave me no slack - I liked that too. I had to find a way to apply the techniques - obviously, as a first-timer, I failed. I struggled as much as I can until he finally pinned me down into submission with a neck choke. By the time I tapped-out, my lips were purple! Firoz said that had I delayed for 2 seconds more, I would have passed out. The other guy, as a consolacion, said I was pretty strong - not a bad compliment considering I sparred with a seasoned fighter half my age.

Ending Thoughts
I wouldn't be pursuing Jiu-jitsu though. My objective was simply to get a glimpse of this martial arts that caught the world by storm and in fact has been an integral component of the now-evolved Mix Martial Arts at the UFC. The techniques of Jiu-jitsu are highly evolved, precise, articulated and lethal. You might as well be escaping the constriction of a reticulated python when up against a Jiu-jitsu fighter.

Thank you Firoz, Keeno, Joem and the rest of the Deftac team who allowed me into their space. Those precious 3 hours on the mat were quite painfully pleasant and memorable!

early birds getting a warm-up light warm-up with Firoz class hasn't started yet and they're already into it others start arriving and started gui-ing up
they call it, 'rolling' leg-lock? class formally starts with a warm-up...similar to Chakrasana in yoga a demo on technique
Joem assisting us newbies on proper technique Firoz on guard sometimes, it's hard to distinguish technique from simply wanting to get out of a lynch Keeno showing how it's done right
everything happens on the mat...just like yoga full-on power by Keeno it could look like a melee arm-locks, leg-locks and a whole slew of locks...lock, stock and barrel!
the guy in blue gave me a neck-choke that turned my lips purple you can call it a hugfest too...a combative kind question and answer section where Keeno addresses queries and demos the answers flattered to be allowed to join them on this shot
body in pain, but smiles all over humbled to be in the presence of Firoz and Keeno

(7 Dec, 2015) In my pursuit of learning and evolving my Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts practice, I have met many interesting and awesome people who have shaped the way I view the world around me. One of these awesome people is TheLoneRider, Gigit Sulit, who I had the pleasure of practicing yoga with about a year ago. I'm very happy to have shared with him my art with him. Oss! Good karma!
