English Teacher
A Japanese company-head inquired from my "English Teacher" advertisement if I can be his English teacher. I replied that we meet first and have a casual conversation. That way, he can size me up if he likes me to be his teacher. This would allow me too, to discern if I want to be his teacher. I think it's better that way than to jump ahead into what might become an undesirable surprise.

Keeping the Door Open
We casually talked about ourselves...sharing in a non-pressure way, like 2 friends. We found common ground - traveling and scuba diving. Given the prevailing rate for English teachers here in Cebu though, I thought it best to channel my energies elsewhere. I suggested he finds another teacher. But it didn't close the door with Barakki. We could still hangout or do dives together. That's the good thing about having a preliminary talk - you could explore friendship possibilities first before coming down to business.

Pwede na Yan
Barakki and I talked about work ethics - about meeting specifications and delivering within the agreed timeframe. The Japanese are known for their strict work ethics and compliance to standards. Interestingly, he expressed amusement that in his workplace, about 40 local workers, the local phrase he keeps hearing about work quality is "pwede na yan" - it will do. Ouch! But I totally see his point.
