River City Bangkok
I got wind of this free screening through Maria through Get Lost in BKK & Beyond FB page. She had a spare and offered it to any taker. We met at River City Bangkok. At the venue were people from the United Nations, ambassadors from other countries, and even the Bangladesh ambassador was there to grace the event. The small special-purpose theater was newly opened. I would assume they are still doing improvements because the seating wasn't optimized to see the screen (harder to read the sub-titles below) if there is a person in front.
Synopsis
The setting is modern-day Bangladesh where an ageing theater actress is torn between having a baby to please her husband or taking a new role in a play that re-invigorates her love for theater. The movie segues into different scenes about fidelity, friendship and coming to terms with self.
Review
The movie pace was a little too slow for me, but still somehow got me engaged largely to its depiction of modern-day Bangladesh and its pressing social ills in the construction and garment industry (a microcosm of Bangladesh life). The characters seem to live dreary one-dimensional lives. The film tried to depict the difficulty of a woman in patriarchal Bangladesh to come out on her own defying tradition, convention and her own family. The ending was too abrupt. Did they run out of budget to continue? That was my thought bubble. The message of the movie was clear, but not enough to move me as an audience - not enough to involve me emotionally or to invest myself in the movie. When the movie ended, I didn't have any lingering moment about the film.
Post-Movie Cocktails
A pleasant surprise to me was the announcement that there is a post-movie cocktail with hors d'oeuvres. Maria and I got to talk a bit during that time. I wish we talked longer but she had other itineraries lined-up. I also got to talk to the Bangladesh Ambassador. She really had that X-Factor about her on top of good looks, smarts, presence and forward-moving(ness). I wanted to spend more time talking to her, but the line was long and she was probably tired from all that hand-shaking (mine included).
Ending Thoughts
I was glad to have a glimpse of Bangladesh today in its urban setting. On the global stage, Bangladesh seems to have been forgotten or ignored. From where I come from, Bangladesh is a concert organized by George Harrison in August 1971 at Madison Square Garden - that's it! Other than that, I knew nothing about Bangladesh. I'm glad I saw this movie. If not for anything else, I now have a updated and refreshed picture of Bangladesh in my head. Moreover, now I know the country has a young, beautiful and smart ambassador who can articulate her ideas in impeccable English - crush-material, if you ask me.
Thank you for sparing me your extra ticket, Maria. I hope to see you again before I leave Bangkok.
