Push-Ups Oct 22/24, 2018

Push-Ups

Location: Adventure Hostel, Bangkok, Thailand

Many Facets of Push Up
Push-up is a versatile workout and fits many modalities. It can be calisthenics - because you develop your muscularity using body weight. It can also be yoga - high plank going down into chaturanga. It can also be an isometric - hold it on high plank and hold it on low plank. For versatility, you can do many variations - one-hand push-up, elevated deep push-up, jumping push-up, etc.

Elevated Deep Push-up
For intensity, I elevate my feet while keeping the body ruler-straight. But for a full range of motion, I would elevate my hands to let my chest go deeper as I sink-in. I could really feel the stretch on my pecs with this one.

1-Hand Push-up
This one is really a novelty and seriously difficult to do. It is also injury prone as the body contorts on the way down causing the shoulder joints to pivot under heavy load.

Ending Thoughts
With regular push-ups, the pecs and triceps are developed. But as a yogi, why not limit push-ups to a physical workout? Combined with breath, awareness and a non-reactive mind, it's as much a yoga as any other asana.
