Window Seat [His Precious] Nov 1, 2018

Window Seat [His Precious]

Location: Chao Phraya River, Bangkok, Thailand

Comfort on the Window Seat
On the ferry along the Chao Phraya River, a man on the window seat was making the most of the view as he was comfortably seated while others were standing up on the crowded ferry. He must have been thinking, "I am so lucky to have this seat while the others are standing up."

Window Seat [His Precious]

Drenched
Suddenly, it rained and accumulated rain water was pouring down on his seat, getting him drenched. The entire length of the boat trip, he was so miserable trying to keep himself dry by redirecting the water but to no avail. Other people even tried to help him out by offering him napkins and tissues. It would seem like a normal thing that can happen to anyone. Then a realization hit me!

Attachment to the Window Seat
Why didn't he just leave the 'window seat' to spare him all that inconvenience? Obviously, the people standing up were having a much easier time than him with his 'window seat'.

Real Life Analogy
The realization got more interesting when I saw an analogy to real life. I heard of a popular actress in the Philippines who married a scion of a wealthy Chinese family. She was probably not well educated but she had the killer looks to snare the wealthy man. She lived the life - big house, lots of domestic helpers, delicious food on the table, travel perk, etc.

Of course it was a different story for the rest of the Chinese clan. She was seen as an unfit bride who married for money. Restrictions were imposed on her every move - where she can or cannot go, what she can and cannot do. She was given the veiled condescension and blatant disapproval in anything she did. Of course it was a miserable life for her. Like the man who was getting drenched but wouldn't leave his window seat, she too stayed on, latching herself to her 'life of ease'.

Ending Thoughts
What am I to make out of all this? Attachment! The man was so attached to his window seat he thought he was ahead of the game from everyone else who was standing, not realizing he was the most miserable guy on the boat. He totally missed the point that the people standing up were all ok and he was not. Would any of those standing-up trade places with him? Of course not! He stubbornly refused to leave his precious seat. The actress? Same thing.

This same scenario is repeated everyday in countless zombie lives. Are you living one?
