Aerobic Fight
I thought the "Fight Class" was a serious martial arts program but unsure what fight discipline. Since I was in Thailand, I was thinking, Muay Thai? I briefly practised Muay Thai in Canada for only about 3 months many years ago. My lingering impression was that it was vicious and no-nonsense - it will maim and debilitate the enemy. However, soon after the class began, I soon realized the class wasn't so much a martial arts class but an aerobic exercise - think Zumba but with kicks and punches. It was similar to a Body Combat Class I taught in Cebu a few years ago.

The Session
San took us to a choreographed series of warm-ups and stretches before going full-on with the core program. With loud up-beat music to rev us up, we engaged in single punches, and transitioned into a combination of straights, hooks and upper cuts. Towards the middle to the program, we were throwing elbows and knees. As we built steam and heat, we started lashing out kicks - front kicks, side-kicks, round-house, back kicks, etc. We would weave and duck, swaying our bodies side to side, bobbing our heads up and down as we danced with our footwork.
Ending Thoughts
It was a continuous aerobic threshold class that lasted 45 minutes. By that time, I was beat up from punching, weaving, dancing with my footwork, kicking, etc. Not having done this in a long time, I really felt how heavy my arms and legs were. It's a different level of fitness. You can be a big body builder and still die on the floor trying to do foot work shuffle, throwing a right cross followed-up by an upper cut, grabbing an imaginary head and slamming it down your knees. Yes, it's a different kind of fitness. I knew my body would be hurting the following day, but it was the kind of joyful pain I've become used to and looked forward to. At the end of it, I was exhausted but felt alive!
Thank you for the awesome Fight Class, Teacher San !!!
