Google Willow Chip: Quantum Computer Unleashed

The Genie is out of the Bottle
There has been a long-lingering talk about quantum computing and how it will change the way we live. It was promising, but it was still plagued by problems - near absolute zero working temperature, isolation from the slightest shock and radio waves and an almost infinite generation of errors. Although eagerly anticipated, most thought it was still decades in the making. Almost without a public warm-up, Google unleashed its quantum computer using the Willow chip. In 5 minutes, it solved a mathematical problem that would have taken the world's fastest supercomputer 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to solve - this is longer than the age of our universe! It might as well be the launching of a thermonuclear bomb - indeed, the world would never be the same.

How Quantum Computers will Change the world we live in

  1. Revolutionize technology and science - everything is accelerated. Products that took decades to develop can now be developed in days. This includes pharmaceuticals, super conductors, and next=level batteries for EV and enhancing climate models by synthesizing megadata and modeling complex environmental systems.
  2. Optimizing complex systems - it can factor in multiple variables and see the final output in minutes and can come up with the optimum equation at real time to maximize output, minimize waste, optimized use of resources, etc. This will improve supply chains, traffic management, and predicting market behavior.
  3. Advancing artificial intelligence - QCs can revolutionize the development of AI, machine learning, data science and give statistical probabilities on pattern recognition
  4. Breaking and reinventing cryptography - QCs can break current encryption - passwords may no longer be secure. Old undecipherable manuscripts can now be decoded. They can also develop new quantum-safe encryption
  5. Healthcare is personalized and highly targeted - the shotgun approach by current medication is a thing of the past. Drugs can be developed to target specific diseases from specific persons given their gene mapping
  6. Revolutionizing Energy - QCs can maximize grid efficiency, storage systems for reusable energy, accelerate fusion research
  7. Develop the Theory of EVerything - with so much knowledge and lightning speed processing, QCs can solve the age-old questions about our universe and harmonize the fundamental forces in nature. It can aggregate the different theories of everything into an elegant mathematical model.

Challenges facing QCs
QC is still its infancy and could be a full decade before it becomes mainstream for widespread use. Because not all problems require quantum computing, QCs will more likely augment rather than replace classical computers. Currently, it has to address the following challenges.

  1. Scalability - building big enough QCs with more qubits to tackle practical problems
  2. Stability - a truck hitting a pothole a mile away can cause errors. A half degree of temperature change can unstabilize the process
  3. Error correction - QCs are prone to errors...too prone compared to classical computers
  4. Access and cost - right now, it's too expensive for the average consumer. Only big corporations can afford it
  5. Ethical concerns - QCs can hack legacy encryption and displace whole industries

Ending Thoughts
When AI was unleashed, I was also unleashed. Suddenly, I had information access at the tip of my fingers - information that might take days to synthesis had I asked the search engines. I could ask very targeted questions that search engines don't even have an index for. With this, I understood the world a lot more. I got a better sense of bearing about this cosmic environment. Now, there is quantum computing. If you augment AI with quantum computing, what do you have? I don't know. But my excitement is up through the roof.
