Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)
GPS waypoint: 7°03'51.7"N 125°36'27.8"E
Location: 115 Claro M. Recto Ave, Davao City 8000, Philippines
Long Line, One Teller While waiting for my turn at BPI bank, I noticed there was only one teller attending to the 30-something people who were waiting for their turn. There were staff around but nobody seemed to care about the long line with only one teller. On top of that, this teller kept entertaining people who were cutting into the line. I looked at the rest of those waiting and they seem to have that angered but disempowered look in their faces.
Telling The Teller Off I couldn't stand it. Furious, I stood up and told the teller that the line wasn't moving because she kept entertaining people who cut in. She gave a defensive answer. When I came back to my seat, those in line talked to me about their frustration - they were all just as frustrated as I was but nobody was crying foul.
Telling The Manager Off Still, with just one teller, I went to the manager's office and told him off as well. I told him the dire situation and questioned his insensitivity to it. He offered an explanation, but I cut him off saying I didn't need to hear the details. That all I wanted was for him to appreciate the situation and do something about it. I berated him that from the comfort of this armchair, he already saw the long line of people who have waited for so long. The manager was not prepared for that. He could not offer an explanation. This is perhaps the first time in his career someone pointed out his indifference, insensitivity and the overall inefficiency of the bank.
What's in an Ayala Name? This is not a one-off situation. I've had similar experience in BPI Quezon City and BPI Makati. What I find equally disturbing is the fact that this is not a fly-by-night bank. It's an Ayala bank. The word "Ayala" means efficiency and forward-thinking - the country's benchmark for banking. And this is the best they've got?
Ending Thoughts 2 days in the Philippines and I'm reminded all over again why I left to begin with - the indifference/insensitivity of the people who hold control/power - as if to say, "they'll eat whatever shit we throw at them" and sadly, the muted resignation of a disempowered citizenry who are cowed into submission.

BPI Help Desk (Nov 12, 2016) Good morning! We are offline here on weekends but got to read your post while doing admin work. We appreciate the feedback. We will forward this to the concerned unit for proper handling. Just to share, our community hours here on Facebook are 8AM-5PM on weekdays, except holidays. Thank you!

"We will forward this to the concerned unit for proper handling" -- BPI HD (Nov 12, 2016) Like I said, this is not a one-off situation by an aberrant manager. This is now the BPI norm, endemic in just about every BPI branch. What requires proper handling is your core values as a bank in providing quality service to your 'valued' clients.
Ryan Suedo (Nov 12, 2016) Same issue with BPI Branch in IT Park (Cebu) during Mondays.
(Dec 31, 2016) Eight countries - Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore. It's an odyssey through a mosaic of fascinating people, an array of wonderful places, sumptuous food, abundance, joy, solitude, saturation, emptiness, doubt, and exhuberance! I guess that's how I can sum up 2016.....more »»
