Free Yoga at People's Park
People's Park People's Park is Davao City's mecca for fitness training in the morning, and at night, it transforms into a gathering place for people to stroll leisurely and enjoy a quiet evening. It's free, well maintained, secured and of course, safe (like all the rest of Davao).
Yoga Inquiries I'd usually go to the park to do my fitness training - a few stretches on my yoga mat and rope skipping. While on a stretch, a couple stopped to inquire if I do yoga. I said I'd even teach for free. Another couple inquired and I told them the same thing. They assured me that if I teach free yoga, people will come. Apparently, there aren't too many yoga teachers in Davao - or even a dedicated yoga studio, although the gyms have a yoga offering. I gave them a webpage to provide more details about the free yoga session - schedule, what to bring, yoga etiquette, etc. That way, expectations are managed and we'd all be in the same page during the practice.
Giving Back to the Community Whenever I'm in a new place, I give back to the community by teaching free yoga. I've done this in Baguio, Quezon City, Gen San, Dumaguete and I'd love to do this in Davao City. Usually, the only hindrance to yoga is finding a suitable place. But here in Davao, there's People's Park.
Ice Breaker The first class turned out well. A couple turned up. Again 2 people showed up the following day, Sunday. Doing it in a public park with an audience was a first for me but it was all good. I was hoping the curious onlookers would inquire and eventually join the weekend yoga class. It's a excellent way to gain friends too, specially for a drifting traveller like me.
Packing Up Again Unfortunately, before we could even gain momentum, my plans to sustain myself in Davao didn't pan-out. I was constrained to leave and look for greener pasture. This also means the end of free yoga at People's Park. It's just sad that something that holds promise of continued growth would be nipped at the bud. But like I always say, this is only in the here-and-now. Maybe someday things would be more favorable. But for now, I need to pack up again and move.
