Iloilo City
It's my first time to visit Iloilo City after 8 years. What the locals no longer notice is fresh and stark to me. It gets my attention.

Bahalina and Pepsi to Start the Day
Bahalina and Pepsi to Start the Day

Bahalina and Pepsi to Start the Day

(February 28, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines) Joining the Old Airport Walkers to their post-walk sikwate, a brave soul put out the traditional bahalina and its partner, Pepsi. A good start in the day is all it takes to make your day!

Bodacious Parking
Bodacious Parking

Bodacious Parking

(February 28, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines) When you park a full 2 meters from the curb, you must be the Big Swinging Dick in town!

Dirty Harry
Dirty Harry

Dirty Harry

(February 27, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines) This aggressive security guard demanded I leave the public street parking because it was for the exclusive use of Palawan Pawnshop customers. I told him he has no authority and no right and that I was on government property. But he used intimidation, coersion and harrassment. The city of Tagbilaran boasts being the city of peace and friendship in the Philippines...try parking in front of Palawan Pawnshop and see how friendly and peaceful this place is. This gives new meaning to "Behold Bohol".

Third wheel
Third wheel

Third wheel

(February 20, Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines) At the CPG Park, I noticed this dog watching 2 lover-dogs play and frolick. It looked like he was a third wheel. I know the feeling. Back in my university days, I was friends with Noel and Grace. The 3 of us were inseparable - we hung out together, ate out together and shared stories and laughter. There was no sexual tension - just pure friendship. Then one night, the 3 of us smoked pot. Grace got horny and fucked Noel. From then on, they were together and inseparable, to my exclusion. I would see them hang out, eat and laugh...and I was no longer part of the picture. Fuck that!

Robinsons Mall Lounge
Robinsons Mall Lounge

Robinsons Mall Lounge

(February 16, Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines) Robinsons Malls keep pushing the boundaries of customer experience...better than Ayala, better than SM. This time, it has a comfy customer lounge with a clean washroom and phone charger - P20, but free to Seniors. Whenever I have to take a shit, my worry is the cleanliness of the public washrooms. I don't mind paying for this convenience but often, it's not available unless I crash into a hotel lobby. Kudos, Robinsons!

River Esplanade
River Esplanade

River Esplanade

(February 15, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Iloilo City's intricate river system is lined up with wide cobblestoned walkways, sometimes on both sides. This is a huge reprieve from the city's bad air (jeepneys spewing black smoke) and gives Ilongos a getaway from the city while being in the city.

Dedicated Bike Lanes
Dedicated Bike Lanes

Dedicated Bike Lanes

(February 15, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Iloilo City's major thoroughfares are lined with dedicated bike lanes. This makes commuting by bicycle safe and easier. This promotes cycling for cleaner air.

Quantum Mechanics in Classical Physics
Quantum Mechanics in Classical Physics

Quantum Mechanics in Classical Physics

(February 14, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Crazy things happen within the realm of Quantum Mechanics...like Schrodinger's cat being both alive and dead at the same time until you open the box. This cannot happen in classical physics. But this cake store seems to defy that exception. It is both open and close at the same time until you open the door - if the door is locked, then it's closed. If the door opens, then the store is open.

Government Officials Destroy Good Roads
Government Officials Destroy Good Roads

Government Officials Destroy Good Roads

(February 9, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) In a blantant display of corruption, government officials destroyed this good road to build another road on top of it. In whispered tones, they say, "We have to use the money or next year's budget won't include it.". That is cras, but the worse truth is, they make a bundle for themselves by way of corruption.

Vietnamese Resto in Jaro, Iloilo City

Vietnamese Resto in the middle of Jaro, Iloilo City

(February 9, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) I was riding my bike along the busy street of Jaro in Iloilo when I spotted a Vietnamese restaurant. It was owned and operated by a Vietnamese woman who could not speak English. Of course, I stopped and ordered my fav Pho beef noodle soup. I guess the greens that traditionally come along with Pho soup were not locally available, but it was great to taste a little bit of Vietnam in Iloilo.

Night Light
Night Light

Night Light

(February 8, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) My first night on top of the bunk bed in a dorm room facing the long flourescent light gave me no sleep when anyone arriving at night would open the light. First thing I did the following day was to buy a night light. Others got it but some assholes would still open the light. I then had to put a night eye mask on. Life throws you manageable little jabs...you just smile and learn to dodge and duck.

Military Honor Coin
Military Honor Coin

Military Honor Coin

Military Honor Coin

(February 8, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) A retired US Army officer showed me his collection of military coins. This is not widely known, but apparently, on military occassions guested by high ranking brass (captain to general), the lower officers take turns introducing themselves with a handshake. Sometimes, the higher ranking officer slips a military coin in the handshake. This means the big guy has been keeping an eye on the small guy and the small guy has been making the grade. This usually means you are being groomed for higher office. When these small guys get together for a drink, they play a game. Each tosses his bragging coin and everyone compares all the coins. The coin given by the highest ranking officer (usually a general) wins and the holder get free drinks from everyone. This US Army officer I was talking to, showed me all his coins. I would say he was on the fast track up until he took early retirement.

(February 6, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Some guys need to move back while some mortals need to stand closer...that's just life.

Free Phone-charging at SM City Iloilo

(February 6, SM City Iloilo, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Some big reputable malls don't offer phone charging stations, but SM City Iloilo does...FREE!

Which key to the back door?

Which key to the back door?

(February 6, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) If they still haven't figured out the right key after 5 minutes, it now becomes, "choose your wild"!

Or Else

Or Else

(February 6, 2025, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Consider yourself warned !!!

Fair Game on a Pedestrian Lane
Fair Game on a Pedestrian Lane

Fair Game on a Pedestrian Lane

(February 5, Iloilo City, Iloilo, Philippines) Motorists will still beat you to it even when you are already crossing the pedestrian lane. Cross the street at your own risk. If you are run over while crossing the pedestrian lane, it means you can win your case in court...if you are still alive.

Ending Thoughts
Iloilo City is better than where I am now. But like most cities in the country, it is plagued by the same issues - uncontrolled black soot emission from jeepneys / commercial vehicles and destruction of good roads by questionable politicians. That's just the way it is in the Philippines - take it or leave it.

LSD and Holotropic Breathing Yoga

LSD and Holotropic Breathing

(March 17, 2025) On several researches, I've stumbled upon LSD being a mind-expander and not the narcotic that the mainstream has vilified. I would have been willing to try some, but the logistics and cost were discouraging. Then, while reading Holographic Universe, Prof. Stanislav Grof talked about duplicating the effects of LSD on breath alone. He even published a book detailing how it was done. I was hooked. ...more »»

Iloilo City Pros and Cons

Pros

  1. Great Food - La Paz Batchoy, Pancit Molo, baye-baye, KBL (Kadyos, Baboy, at Langka)

  3. Oysters - oysters are abundant and cheap at P60/bowl

  5. Dedicated bike lanes - major thorough fares are clearly marked with dedicated bicycle lanes

  6. Heritage mansions - although most have been neglected and now in a state of disrepair, there is a growing movement to restore them. This one, the Molo Mansion, was purchased by SM and refurbished back. The surrounding grounds were converted to chill-out zones with popular eating stalls

  7. Yoga community - from what I've seen, Iloilo has a vibrant yoga community. It has many yoga studios and fitness gyms offering yoga. There also seems to be a healthy conscious community. This means a lot to me. I would be in my elements.

  8. Shopping Malls - Iloilo City has 3 Robinsons and 2 SMs. Ayala is yet to develop its mall but it's in the works. A mall is a litmus test or a benchmark to a city's progress. A backward city probably has a 'mom and pop' mall like Tagbilaran's ICM Mall where they will cancel a last full show if there aren't at least 5 people - forget about the people who made the trip to see that movie.

Cons

  1. Black Smoke Emissions - public jeepneys and most commercial vehicles spew black smoke from their mufflers leaving Iloilo's air dirty and unhealthy. This is simply a matter of enforcing existing emission laws, but this practice goes on unabated. This tells me the public officials are too comfortable inside their SUVs, they no longer know what's happening at street level.
  2. They Destroy Good Roads - on the surface, it looks stupid but the reality is blantant corruption.

  3. Drivers do not Yield to Pedestrians Crossing the Pestrian Lane

Iloilo City Travel Tips

Travel Tips:

  • from the airport, a cab is around P300. But a van (where passengers are pooled until it gets full) is only P50 to SM. However, you can negotiate with the driver to drop you off your hotel at no extra charge. But you have to ask for it, otherwise he'll drop everyone off at SM. It's also a good idea to get his number and arrange for pick-up to the airport.
  • When in Jaro, negotiate with a pedicabby to take you to all the old-world mansions. Mine agreed to P100 for an hour of touring.
  • when in Iloilo City, you must eat their Batchoy especially at La Paz for the renowned La Paz Batchoy
  • take the short jeep ride to Villa Beach and eat by the beach

Places to Stay:

  • Ong Bun Pension House - single bed with shared bathroom, P150/night, near corner Quezon-Ledesma Street, (033)3351271 or (0910)4335048
