Visiting Lubcon Falls, Surigao del Sur

GPS waypoint:Highway Junction N 09 10.463 E 126 10.179 / Lubcon Falls N 09 10.317 E 126 10.091
Location: Purok 10, Brgy. Mabahin, Municipality of Cortes, Province of Surigao del Sur

Talking to the Locals
I was at Jakah's Restaurant in Tandag and asked the staff if they know of any interesting spot around the area. They gave me a few - Lubcon Falls, Laswitan Rocks, Lanusa Sanctuary and Magkawas Falls. Some are too far but along the way towards my northbound travel direction. I'll visit them on my way to Surigao City. The closest was Lubcon Falls. I already set out for it.

Waterfall Features
From Tandag, it was a 30-minute jeep ride heading north towards Surigao City. There was a 300m walk from the junction and there it was - Lubcon Falls! Lubcon Falls is a charming little waterfall with a 6-foot deep plunge pool (at its deepest). It's not on the tourism path and largely remains unknown outside people from the neighboring municipalities. It is largely undeveloped except for a few concrete steps placed to ease access into the plunge pool. It is possible to stand right up the falls and even go behind it. The water is cold and refreshing. Locals go there for family picnic or group dates. It's also cheap going to Lubcon Falls since there is no need to pay for expensive habal-habal rides (unlike Tinuy-an Falls).

Ending Thoughts
Mindanao is generously sprinkled by one-off natural features that are not grand enough to make it on the pages of Lonely Planet, but charming enough to merit a visit. Lubcon Falls is one such treat. Perhaps its anonimity is a good thing. The place is kept from further development which may inadvertently take away from its charm. To get to learn about these obscure places, it's best to ask locals...many locals. Some people from Tandag for instance don't even know the caves within their area. And the one I met at the falls, who was born and raised in Tandag, now in his late 20s, is experiencing this gem for the first time. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit to Lubcon Falls.

Election Vote-Buying and Vote-Selling

(May 14, 2013) Vote-buying and vote-selling. Two landmarks that puck the Philippine election landscape. Sadly, if you keep the people poor enough and ignorant enough (as designed by the powers that be), they can easily be coyed into vote-selling. For every P100 traded for a vote, perhaps P10,000 pesos is lost for public spending (for schools, hospitals, etc.). Why? Because the politician has to steal it back to recoup his election expense!....more »»
