White-Water River Kayaking at Kayak Inn
GPS waypoint: 11°19'04.55"N, 122°04'38.24"E
Location: Barangay Tuno, Tibiao (municipality), Antique (province), Philippines
A First Timer I've done white-water rafting on river and kayaking on the sea, but white-water river kayaking? That's a first. I couldn't pass off the opportunity at Kayak Inn. With Tibiao River relatively shallow, it was a beginner run I could try my hands on.
Preparation Still wet from our trek to the waterfall, Abbey and I were already geared-up for kayaking. Our guide carried our kayak manually on foot from Kayak Inn to the drop-off point. After a brief orientation, we sat on the kayak and gave it a go.
capsizing
Bumpy Ride The river was on the shallow side, giving us a bumpy ride as the kayak kept hitting the rocks below. Lots of times we got stuck but managed to body-push our way out of it. Occassionally, the kayak would turn around and we'd be going backwards. There was no time to think and often, instinct takes over in paddling. At one point, I capsized. It wasn't that difficult to get right back in. The 3-minute ride was over before we knew it. We were back at the foot of Kayak Inn. After a cold splash in the river, a hot kawa bath was in order.
Ending Thoughts It was timely that a day later, a storm came in and swelled the river into an angry torrent. It wasn't safe for kayaking anymore. Lucky we did the ride when we could.
