Cagayan de Oro: Passing Through
Location : Cagayan de Oro, Philippines
A Decade Ago
En route to Davao from Siquijor, I had to pass through Iligan and then Cagayan de Oro. I love this place and I stayed here for over 3 months back in 2013 - 10 years ago. It would be good to be back and reminisce the good times.
Iligan to CDO
From Iligan, I arrived after 2 hours on the bus at Bulua West Terminal, PHP 200. CDO has 2 bus terminals - Bulua for west-bound buses (Iligan, Plaridel, Zamboango, etc.) and Agora for east-bound buses (Butuan, Camiguin, Surigao, Davao, etc.). From there, I took a jeep for the Agora East
Terminal to take a look around.
Agora East Bus Terminal
Agora is not just a bus terminal. It's also a market and center for commerce. The market is big with lotsa merchandise and eats. I wasn't in a rush to head to my hotel - my backpack was light enough for me to walk about.
Parkview Hotel
The cheapest CDO hotel I found in Agoda was PHP 400/night by the Divisoria area - Parkview Hotel. With my discount it wasn't painful. It was spartan barebones but that was all I needed. Location was spot-on but the happening place at night was no longer Divisoria but Congon's Night Market.
Cogon's Night Market
10 years back, I lived for 2 months near Cogon Market at De Luxe and Conchita Hotels - there was no Night Market then. So that evening, I boarded a jeep for the night market. It's wasn't a posh touristy night market unlike what you might see in Thailand, but simply a makeshift market for locals along busy roads that were closed for the night event.
Street Massage at Plaza Divisoria
An institution in CDO is the street massage along Plaza Divisoria when the sun goes down - PHP 150 for half body. It used to be for blind masseuse, but now able-bodied people have encroached on their ground. There are many groups or organizations and some sport a color-code. The setting is alfresco and very laid back and unpretentious. Of course, I opted for a blind masseuse.
Ending Thoughts
After an overnight, it felt like it was time to resume my trip for Davao. I didn't really feel the old magic when I was here in 2013, but that's expected. Places have shifting energies much like people. It felt like saying hello to a good friend though.
