Monkey Forest in a City? Yes, there really is a monkey forest in the heart of Ubud - and they're running around knowing fully well they own the place! Humans are second class citizens here in the realm of Hanuman, the Monkey God.

Park System Monkey Forest is spectacular - even without the monkeys, it's a worthwhile destination on it own for its natural landscaping, relief system and the added facilities like the wooden boardwalks on a canyon side while the river runs through. It has temples, souvenir shops, stages, bridges, galleries, a clinic, etc. I find this place even more exciting than the 1 kilometer2 Botanical Gardens of Bogor (Java).
Hanuman, the Monkey God With Hinduism as the majority religion in Bali, there is a natural devotion to its deities, one of them being Hanuman, the Monkey God. In Hinduism, Hanuman is a staunch devotee of Rama. He is mentioned in several Hindu texts like Mahabharata, but most specially in Ramayana where he played a central role exemplifying devotion and loyalty to Rama. Hanuman's renowned strength as a result of his celibacy is popular among Indian wrestlers.
Monkeys As of June 2016, there were 678 monkeys belonging to 6 distinct groups with its own home range. I wonder how they determined the grouping and home range when seemingly the monkeys are just randomly all over the place with no boundary lines. You don't see them clustered together as one group like a herd of sheep. Just my thought bubble.
Dos and Donts
- don't look them in the eye as they see this as aggression
- don't run when they approach you...always keep calm
- don't bring any visible plastic bag as they might grab it mistaking it for food
- when they try to grab something from you, never pull it back
- don't touch the monkeys specially the babies
Ending Thoughts These are probably the luckiest monkeys on the planet. They are free to roam in an expansive jungle-like environment even Tarzan would dream about. They have no predators and the only thing they have to do is eat, sleep and mate. Wow! That's the life. They're even better off than the herd of white spotted dear on the grounds of the presidential palace in Bogor because these monkeys have a natural environment. With its proximity to the main town and its affordable admission, it's sinful to miss the Monkey Forest when you're in Ubud.

Pengosikan Street, Ubud
- the tourist area where most of the hotels, restaurants, ticket offices, tour operators are, is concentrated within the rectangular area covered by Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Hanuman and Jalan Monkey Forest. Best to book your hotel within this area
- best, cheapest, fastest and most comfortable (this is what I did for Ubud and in Singapore) - at the airport, talk to other white travelers waiting on the same gate if they are going to Ubud. Arrange for a taxi pool. With 3 guys, you split the taxi fare (usually IDR 200k + IDR 5k for airport entrance) three-ways. You end up paying just slightly more (IDR 68k) than roughing it through a series of bemos and vans.
- take a bemo (public bus) to Kuta (IDR 6k) then take a shuttle bus by Perama to Ubud (IDR 50k)
(US$1 = Indonesian Rupiah IDR 13,140 = Philippines Php 47.00 as of July 1, 2016)
- one small bottle beer with live band
- 1.5 liter drinking water
- one hour massage
- warung food in hawker style food cart
- coffee in trendy cafes
- bicycle rental
- laundry (although I've seen one at IDR 8k per kilo)
- shuttle to airport
- bunk bed in a dorm room, shared toilet
- internet cafe
- haircut
- cultural performances
- standard drop-in yoga class
