August 2016 BlogsHatha Flow Yoga with Joanna Lizares Co at Holiday Spa and Gym (Aug. 31, 2016) Joanna has come a long way from 3 years back when we last talked as she was immersing herself into yoga. Now a 200-RYT with a core following, she teaches with conviction and passion, always in pursuit of deeper understanding. I was lucky to have attended her class. Her fierce independence and candor have always been engaging.....more »» Conducting a Power Yoga Class at Yoga Davao (Aug 29, 2016) At Yoga Davao, I got to conduct my first yoga class since my 3-week yoga immersion in Bali. It was good to go back into the practice, see my hosts RL & MM, and meet the yoga community of Yoga Davao....more »» Good Eats with Mel Pangan's Davao Food Tour (Aug 26, 2016) Anyone can do a food tour...just read up on food on a destination, connect the dots and do the leg work. As a DIY budget backpacker, that's how I do it. I could get lost, maybe get scammed, maybe the place closed down, or just couldn't find the place. There are no guarantees. However, I got the chance to actually participate in an organized food tour of Davao by Mel Pangan. Big difference!....more »» Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) (Aug 25, 2016) The long line at BPI along CM Recto in Davao wasn't moving. Despite many tellers, only one was attending to the line. When she allowed people not in line to cut-in, I couldn't take it anymore. I told her off and I told the bank manager off.....more »» A Gifted Dell Laptop from the Usual Suspect (Aug. 24, 2016) When my laptop broke down, I was a soldier in the warzone with no gun. How do I survive on the open road? My travels, the roof over my head, food in my belly were all because of my laptop. But there simply was no budget for a big ticket item like that. Almost from thin air, I got my much needed laptop as a gift. From the telltale sign, I knew it was from the usual suspect.....more »» Mini-Life in Singapore(August 8-22, 2016) After 2 weeks in Singapore, starting off with my detention at Immigration, welcomed by my friend Eunice and struggling to find a cheap place to sleep, life marginally eased up with every passing day. I eventually secured barter hotel and resto deals and met interesting people who added color to my stay. I rediscovered Singapore in a different light. My analogy for Singapore is that of a friend I'm not necessarily close to, but whose company I enjoy with equal respect and admiration.....more »»Overnight in Kluang, Malaysia (Aug 13-14, 2016) It was a surprise gesture from Eunice when she invited me to come along to her hometown in Kluang, Malaysia for the weekend to meet her family and show me around. Kluang is a suburban town where people are deeply entrenched in their ways and tradition. It's a throwback to a Norman Rockwell era when the world was more innocent and people more connected.....more »» Peoplescape of Singapore(Aug. 8-22, 2016) Unlike Ubud (Bali) where my peoplescape was one of a fast-turning revolving door, Singapore was more fleeting and far in between. Singapore is not a backpacker destination where spontaneous social interaction is expected and anticipated. The local culture doesn't lend itself to that and the visiting travelers are not the types you see sleeping on bunk beds in mixed dorm rooms.....more »»Discovering the Neighborhood Cafes of Singapore(Aug. 8-22, 2016) Exploring neighborhoods is fun and full of surprises - trendy cafes, artistic chill zones, innovative restos, etc. Every few blocks or so, you stumble upon a chic cafe that invites you in. Then you invite your friends to meet and chill there!....more »»Biological Cell Regulation (BCR) Therapy at Chang Wellness(Aug 16, 2016) While exploring my Lavender neighborhood, I chanced on a wellness center that uses a US$50,000 German-import, a Biological Cell Regulation machines that stimulates cell repair and regeneration to eliminate pain and restore health. When I told the owner I'm a yoga practitioner, she offered treatment to see how it works on a fit body. I didn't say no.....more »»Getting my Xiaomi Redmi Note3 Smart Phone(Aug. 9, 2016) My benevolent universe parted the Red Sea to bring me a phone I needed to have - a Xiaomi Redmi Note3. Its fingerprint was all over the place.....more »»A Roof Over my Head in Singapore(Aug 8-22, 2016) Singapore is an expensive city and lodging is a major expense for a traveler. It is not backpacker-friendly. The cheapest bunk bed in a dorm room hovers around US$10/night. I cannot sustain that price point. I had to think fast and survive on my wits to ensure a comfortable night's sleep without hemorrhaging cash." />....more »»2-Hour Detention at Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority(August 8, 2016) I got detained for 2 hours with my bus leaving me. Having lost precious time, I had to scurry for a bus to the main city after my release. I have long admired Singapore. But after this, how do I feel now about this city-state?....more »»A First-Timer in Malacca (July 28-Aug 8, 2016) At first, Malacca felt like Penang with the food scene, the city architecture that earned it a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, the Chinese majority, etc. But staying 11 days revealed Malacca's own charm and attracton.....more »» Street Art Scene of Malacca (August 6, 2016) Malacca has a burgeoning art scene that's plastered on city walls, art cafes, trendy restos and old building facade. Every once in a while, you get a good find!....more »» The River Charm of Malacca (August 5, 2016) I'd been to many quaint river towns and they are all beautiful - Kampot, Battambang, Luang Prabang, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, Hoi An, etc. But none have captured and capitalized more of its river charm than Malacca. The Malacca River cuts right across the city with its quaint cafes, trendy restos and chic hotels lined-up along its river bank.....more »»
