Camp Life in Camp Calauit, Busuanga
Lazy on the Hammock After the fund raising project it was normal again at Camp Calauit. With my butt still sore from the traverse ride, the only option was to be lazy on the hammock by the beach.
Head Land Outback Greg took me to the summit of the head land, a hilly portion where the peak allows for a spectacular view of the nearby islands. It was a manageable climb along marked trails. It was still brushy on the top but the islands can be seen with its signature sandbar. The contour of the coral reef can also be discerned. With a little more clearing, a 360 degree view from the summit can be had. Going down was fun having to rappel down with a robust nylon rope. From the bottom, it was a walk on the rocky shore to the beach.
A Russian Guest A pleasant surprise was the arrival of a Russian guest who was traveling by herself - Olga. She was there overnight for some kayaking and snorkeling. I was to be her buddy - snorkeling buddy and kayaking buddy. We took the double kayak and went to the nearby islands and stopped at the sandbar. This is the same sandbar Outback Greg took me to, 3 years ago. It was scorchingly hot with no shelter. We didn't stay long and headed back to camp.
Snorkelling The following day, Outback Greg took us to the same islands for snorkelling, but on his monstrous Jetski - it was a big one that carried 4. From the reef's drop-off, Olga and I got off the Jetski and explored the reef on our snorkeling gear. We simply followed the drop-off contour until we would reach the sandbar. But we were lured into shallower sections and before we knew it, Greg was already back on the Jetski waving for us to get to him. But we can't. We couldn't find a way into deeper water without going through shallow sections. It took some pathfinding until we managed to get on board the Jetski. Greg gunned the engine...it felt like we were human torpedoes.
Ending Thoughts As good as it got in Camp Calauit, it felt time to explore Coron Town. Besides, everybody was leaving. Greg was off somewhere and Olga was to catch her flight. Like always, I leave Camp Calauit enriched with fond memories. With Outback Greg's future projects for the place, I can't wait to be back.
