Umbrella Monk
Location: Battambang, Cambodia
(Oct 1, 2014) Fresh from the Philippines, I was unaccustomed to seeing Buddhist monks. As I was walking around Battambang on a hot sunny day with a Vietnamese traveler, I noticed a monk with an umbrella walking on scandals.
TheLoneRider: "Are they allowed to use an umbrella and walk on scandals? I thought they walk barefeet? Didn't they take a vow of austerity?"
Buddhist Vietnamese traveler: "They chose to be a monk to pursue enlightenment - not to live a tortured life!"
