Manny Pacquiao

8 World Titles
When was the last time any fighter took 8 world titles on 8 different divisions? It's never happened before. Who's the Filipino who's made it to the global stage? A few names come to mind - Lea Salonga...hmmm...ok, one name came to mind. But who's the Filipino who's not only made it internationally, but rocked the global stage: one name stands alone - Manny Pacquiao.

Rags to Riches
With lightning speed and devastating blows that can crumble a city wall, Manny blazed his way from a simple panadero (bread maker) in an obscure rural backwater to the global arena earning his mark in boxing's hall of fame. He joins the esteemed ranks of Muhammad Ali, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, etc.

Politics
Again, that alone wins him the Fab People award. But there's more to the man than knuckles. As he was redecorating Margarito's face on the ring, he enjoys a seat in congress, representing Sarangani Province in Mindanao. Granted, he's not he first celebrity to use his celebrity status in working his way into politics. But unlike those celebrities who came before him, Manny doesn't just sit on his laurels and wing everything looking pretty. He's actually taking political science lessons to help him take on the challenges of statemanship. This guy is out to make the most of whatever he can be.

English
From practically no English before, now, through lessons, he can navigate himself through interviews with the foreign press. Again, granted, there's a lot of room to better his diction, grammar, etc., but hey, this guy is taking the time and effort to learn something alien to him before.

Money Management
Whereas boxers are known to make a name for themselves, earn money and enjoy the good life while the adulation lasts, they invariably end up broke and destitute when their 15 minutes is up. Manny on the other hand gets his money professionally managed. He has investments in real estate development projects in Mindanao and owns several real estate properties on at least 2 continents.

Arnold Schwarzzzz
Who does he remind me of? Arnold Schwarzz...whatever. Arnold took the body-building world by storm winning Mr. Olympia, Mr. Universe, etc. He redefined the industy as we know it now. He left that field being the best of them all. Then he set his sights on acting. Again, even with accented English, he became Hollywood's big name asset as the Terminator with an array of action films to his name. Next, he leaves Hollywood for politics. Again, he succeeds by landing the highest public office that can be accorded a naturalized American - governor (of California).

Gung Ho
What's my point? Manny is no different from Arnold as far as pushing oneself to excellence is concerned. Manny sees obstacles as opportunities for growth. Granted, Manny's quick adhoc lessons to prime himself for polite society and higher office will never substitute for years spent in a university. But he remains unfazed by the challenges and takes them on headfirst. He inspires not just people of humble beginnings but the world at large. At 32, he's got a lot of years to explore further just how good he can possibly be.

Parting Words
Manny, I sincerely wish you the best of everything. You do us proud.
