Europe - Day 3 / Geneva, Switzerland
UN state-of-mind
The day started early by going to the UN with Ginny. She secured a pass for me and
I observed the human rights conference she chaired. Kuwait was on the hot seat for not addressing some pressing issues but Ginny was good in cutting through the chase and putting the session back in its tracks. She has the balls to put the belligerent delegates in their places during the conference. I also had the chance to meet Kishor, who will be my host in Paris.
Mentors Additionally, I happen to be seated next to Joe Schekla, a human rights activist whom Ginny puts in high regard. When Ginny and I talked the night before, she talked about Joe in terms of the guy's ability to be a mentor...something I am in search of. We didn't talk at length. I didn't mention to him that desire except that I am at a crossroads where I'm willing to "go with the flow" and let it take me where it takes me. I also mentioned that knowing Ginny has opened me up to the many layers and dimensions of human rights. I hope I made a positive impression on him.
I've read a book about Warren Buffet, Jack Welch, etc., and they all admit to being where they are because they all had mentors...remarkable people who took them under their wings. I so badly need one to put focus on where I should be and to allow me to hurdle this wall I seem to be facing. Joe seems to be that guy for now.
The City I took a walk around the city. Geneva is squeaky clean, organized and expensive. It had the precision of...you guessed it - a Swiss watch. Internet is Swiss francs (SF)7.00/hour (P280/hr or CAN$7/hr) and small coke is F3.00. Given my limited resources, I had to watch it.
Evening Tête-a-tête
I woke up shortly before Ginny arrived. We talked about her adventure in the Cordillera where she met fascinating people and attended unusual rituals (anting-anting) ...not your everyday cup of tea. This would evolve into our usual evening of conversation by the balcony.
