June 9, 2004 Wednesday Workout: traps, gluts I was off to UP to meet with Ginny about my teaching class. The course outline is pretty much open despite the program entering its second year. I had to give a 54-hour lecture about citizenship, volunteerism, etc and another 54 hours of fieldwork for the year. I'd been gone too long so the lecture part will be challenging. I stopped by the Shopping Center to open a PNB account but I needed my appointment papers as faculty, which hasn't been prepared yet. While having lunch, I met Ren, an attractive medical representative, whom I had a pleasant conversation with. Shortly thereafter, my hippie friend back-in-the-day, Egay, showed up and joined our table. It was fun reminiscing about the hippy days. I got a call from Ginny asking me if I can teach a web design class in addition to the CWTS class. I welcomed the opportunity although giving up my Saturdays for it is a sacrifice. Indolence As an impressionable young student back-in-the-day, my teacher tossed a question: Why is the Filipino indolent? One of the theories presented was the weather. It was hot and humid and therefore did not lend itself to productivity. Being born in the Philippines and not having traveled outside its shores, I had no basis for comparison. It was too abstract. However, given my life in New York and Canada with 4 seasons, I know exactly what it means now. Although I still don't agree about Filipinos being indolent. I wanted to wander into Cubao, my old haunt, but the heat and humidity was overbearing and depleted most of my energy. It consumed me. I felt myself unable to move about, while slowly languishing and melting away. Being productive was totally out of the question. I just wanted to get home fast into an air-conditioned room. Credit cards Back at home, I noticed my wallet containing my license and credits cards were gone. I panicked. Although it had no money, my credit limit on those platinum cards was sizeable. I immediately called the credit card companies to put a hold on them. Comments?
