June 10, 2004 Thursday Workout: pecs, triceps, delts I was off to UP using TJ's car. Traffic was heavy. Mr. Maranan, my Spanish teacher, has a methodical and student-friendly way of teaching. I like his style. I had my share of difficulty with my new level 12-13 French class, under Mr. Vera Cruz, but I was not behind the level of the students. It felt just right although I recall having taken this lesson at Alliance in Canada. I was able to pick up my wallet at the registrar's office. Thank God it wasn't stolen or misused. I went to Fine Arts to discuss with Ginny what my new web design class is about. I'll be having 14 senior art major students. Since this is the first time this course is being offered, there is no pre-existing syllabus. I have to create one. The computers are only available 5:30 to 8:30 PM, so the class has to be rescheduled accordingly. As much as teaching this course is challenging and good on my resume, it comes with a hefty price tag - but at this point, I can't say 'no' to Ginny. I haven't been beholden to anyone until now. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. · I teach for a year -I'm ok to stay here for 1 semester, but I really have no intention of staying in the Philippine for a year. The heat, humidity, quality of air and traffic is too much. Furthermore, the reason why I left in the first place is still there. The system of government, though it has improved, is very much still the same - corrupt, bureaucratic and inefficient. · My Saturdays are tied up - weekends are precious to me. Being left behind when the gang goes out on Saturdays is a HUGE down factor. · I may no longer have time available to accept offsite web contracts - without this source of income, I'll be tapped out before the semester is over. · This added course will eat up on what's left of my personal time. Gold gave me a lift to pick up TJ in Makati so we can scout for some laptop computers at Glorietta. The price tag started off at 70K and it's not even a Pentium 4 processor. Ivan knows of a Customs auction at around 20K, but there's no guarantee it's in good working order. We had dinner at Don Henrico's for some Buffalo chicken, pasta and pizza. Later, we went to Starbuck's. I saw a lady all by herself, so I asked her if she'd like to share the table with us. Her name is Mayu, a Japanese who's been here a few months and learning English. With her limited English, she couldn't talk much. Comments? ARCHIVE 2025:
