November 27, 2002 Wednesday My first time to bike to work after my surgery....brrrrrr....cold. Talk with Kiran After her Hatha Yoga class, my yogi Kiran and I chatted at the Leisure Lounge of the office. She's earned a black belt in Karate and yearns to the calling of the martial arts. Her sensei from London is world renowned and without him, it's just not the same. I agree with her. Having a good sensei makes all the difference in developing a love and devotion to the discipline. We were later joined by Collin, an Haikido practitioner and a fellow yoga student. It was great talking about martial arts again. Lunch with Kate A fellow hammerhead who does her hammering on the road is Kate - an officemate whom I bump into at the gym every once in awhile. I mentioned in passing that with the arrival of the spinning bikes at the gym, I'd be interested in learning how to teach a class to keep me fit during the mtb off-season. She offered some materials she had on the teaching part of spinning, which called for the occasion to have lunch. I confessed to her that her remark at the start of the year prompted me to consider racing the "Hell of the North" event in November. Unfortunately, I was unable to due to my nose surgery. We were in March '02 at that time talking about the 24 Hours of Adrenalin race in August. Racing that event was my season objective. She remarked that she needed to participate in that event as well as a staging event for her "Hell of the North" event in November. The 24 Hours of Adrenalin as a staging event? Did I hear her say that right? I know it's utterly childish for me to react to that statement but I vowed to race the "Hell of the North" event as well just to show her she wasn't talking to a "staging rider". She got a laugh hearing that story. Coffee, Food and Friendship Surprisingly, I haven't had the chance to ride with her yet. Thoughts like this remind me of FlyGurlz team owner Michelle who remarked in one of my articles, "Your article brought me right back emotionally to my early years of riding with my best buddy Charles. We would go out for hundreds of kilometers in and around Toronto - stopping for coffee, food and friendship." I started hurting after reading that part. It's been a good many years since I had that joy. My best friend is in New York and when I was still living there, we would bike the stretch of Long Island which would take us nearly the entire day. We'd rest, chat, drink our water and hit the road again. If I were still living in New York and having him to ride with constantly, I wouldn't be TheLoneRider.
