a nomad in search of... | |
Philippine Connection - July 30, 2002 Tuesday Polilio Island - Day 2 We took the "Baby Grace" ferry for our 2.5-hour ride from Real to Polilio Island. Upon arrival, we walked around scouting for cheap lodging. A pedal-powered tricycle, operated by an amiable and eager-to-be-of-assistance driver, Ruben, took us to "Herrera's Lodging" for our P100/person/night rate (CAN$3). We contracted Ruben to take us around town during our entire stay, which he gladly obliged. At P20 (CAN$.80 cents) for the 2 of us for 3 kms., ride is cheap as cheap can be. Our stop was "San Francisco" - a private beachfront property that provided coconut tree shelter from the scorching heat and smooth sandy beach. But that's it - no picnic table, no chairs and no beach mats... which suited us just fine - nature's bounty in Spartan style. Cesar, the property owner's son, took amusement with us and joined us the entire time. Being native to their coconut livelihood, he plucked down a few coconuts for us to drink and eat as we grilled 2 big squids (nokos) on a makeshift charcoal bed. Cheap Emperador Brandy was our liquor of choice. The
jet-black squid ink made for a cool "Goth look" lips. On the way back, we bought some fresh catch of the day (groupers) and cooked at the lodging place. Nightlife is virtually dead except for basketball games at the town plaza.
