May 2016 BlogsExploring the Lush Greenery of Botanic Gardens (May 29, 2016) Another staple tourist destination in Penang is the Botanic Gardens. Imagine a manicured rain forest full of exotic and indigenous flora spaning 29 hectares with an elevation of 579 meters.....more »» Up up and Away to Penang Hill (May 28, 2016) Penang Hill is one of the major tourist attractions in Penang at a peak altitude of 833 meters. Going to the top is via tram where the temperature is 5° cooler than Georgetown. The view of Penang Island is panoramic. On top of the hill, many things can be done as it's a cluster of several peaks. You can make it a full day activity. For the ultra-fit, you can take the flight of steps to the top...about 2 hours. On the way down, there is an option to hike it down 4.2 kms to Botanical Gardens.....more »» About Penang (May 27, 2016) Getting a sense of bearing on Penang....more »» The Legacy of President NoyNoy (PNoy) Aquino (May 26, 2016) After 6 years of presidential rule, PNoy will be stepping down in June to give way to incoming President-elect Rodrigo Duterte. I rallied for PNoy to be elected, had heated conversations with friends who thought differently, and even unfriended a few friends who championed someone else in the presidential campaign of 2010. Let's look back and let us look in the here-and-now to take stock of his accomplishments and failures. What exactly is his legacy?....more »» Exploring Pai, Thailand (May 19-24, 2016) From what I hear about Pai from the travelers I come across with, it's a small mountain town that serves as a backpacker destination when in Thailand. More specifically, it's a hippie town. It's cheap, people are nice, and the vibe is very chill. With my Thailand sojourn coming to a close, it's a destination I had to experience. The 6 days I spent there has been memorable, fun and somehow hinted that I was traveling alone too long...more »» Visiting the Land Split in Pai, Thailand (May 23, 2016) In 2008, a farmer's land in Pai split 2 meters wide and 11 meters deep from an earthquake. Through the years, the split has become wider and longer as more earthquakes hit the area. How does a crack on the earth look like? Time to check it out.....more »» Trekking the Ridges of Pai Canyon (May 23, 2016) Pai Canyon is an interesting geological formation - narrow rock ridges with a deep vertical drop form an intricate web system where you trek and explore.....more »» Climbing up the White Buddha (Wat Phra That Mae Yen) (May 21, 2016) Wat Phra That Mae Yen, more popularly referred to as the 'White Buddha on the hill' requires 353 steps up a hill offering a panoramic view of the Pai and the surrounding landscape. It's one of the nearest attractions from town, you can walk it. Admission is free.....more »» Yoga with Amm Prajna Pitchaya and the Sivananda yoga community of Phan (May 16-18, 2016) Amm Prajna Pitchaya, a Sivananda yoga teacher, accepted my offer to teach (and attend) yoga at her home studio in Phan District. With that, I left Chiang Rai City to travel 40kms south. What was supposed to be a one day activity turned into 3 days of yoga....more »» Visiting the Nam Lot and the Pha Khong Caves of Phan District (May 18, 2016) Just 15.3 kms from the town center of Phan lies 2 caves - the Nam Lot and the Pha Khong Caves. With a rented bicycle together with Sita, a newfound yogini friend, we headed out to check it out....more »» Exploring Chiang Rai, Thailand (May 11-16, 2016) Chiang Rai is the biggest city in Northern Thailand that offers urban amenities plus a lot of nature. I've heard many great things about this place that I had to come back to Thailand to experience this place (and Pai). With roughly 6 days, I set about to explore this destination....more »» Visiting the White Temple of Chiang Rai (Wat Rong Khun) (May 15, 2016) Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple is Chiang Rai's biggest crowd drawer. Temples are usually gilded in Thailand, or the rest of the Buddhist world for that matter. But an iconoclast artist broke the mold and built a Snow White Buddhist temple 13 kms south of Chiang Rai City. It's the first installment of many. The entire project is set to complete in 2070....more »» Exploring Huay Xai, Laos (May 9-11, 2016) With my Thai visa expiring, I had to find a new country to cross. From Chiang Khong, just across the bridge is Huay Xai, Laos. With my desire to come back to Thailand, crossing into Laos but staying close to the Thai border was important. But who knows what's out there in Huay Xai?....more »» Ten Days in Chiang Khong, Thailand (Apr 30 - May 9, 2016) Like Chiang Saen, I've never heard about Chiang Khong until I strayed into the Golden Triangle. But like a black hole, resistance was futile. I had to completely forget about my plans for Pai and just let the Flow take me where it takes me. It was love at first landing in Chiang Khong....more »»
