![]() December 18, 2002 Wednesday The Lonerider and LoneWolf It's been over a year since I initially talked to a colleague at a Halloween party...small chit-chat that extended into a long one-on-one. I can't remember details except for the fact that she likened herself to a lonewolf...a fellow solitary traveler on a personal quest. She recently got older and I'm glad she accepted my invite to a birthday lunch treat at Ichiban, a popular Japanese restaurant close to work. It was great touching base again and picking up perhaps where the previous conversation left off. It was all good. It's not everyday I get to hang with people I develop a connection to, but the bond stays there...for good times and shelter from the storm. Ex-Chapters Gathering Mathew, the keeper of the faith, sent out an invite to gather ex-Chapters people into a night of gathering beginning at the Charlotte Room and eventually to the Bovine Sex Club for its monthly Kick-Ass Karaoke Night. It wasn't much a gathering of critical mass but the people who can make it happen were there. From the Charlotte, the kilometer-or-so brisk walk to the Bovine in balmy single-digit temperature was refreshing. Finally, the Bovine...the venue for counter-culture entities of many persuasion...tweakers, throw-back and neo hippies, Goths, "be-in" cyberpunks, etc...all good. While it was only my second time, it felt like coming over to visit an old friend. Initially hesitant about going on stage before getting totally hammered (okay, I'm shy), I was torn about being there as a spectator or participant. I was reminded of OM....no spectators...only participants. That was all I needed. I submitted my song entry but was put 'on hold' until the next 'batch of 10'. It didn't matter. Trying was what mattered. The tragedy would have been deciding to be a spectator. Again, nothing was taken away....all good. Space Oddity Space Oddity, a very early David Bowie song was sung by a captivating woman-in-black - an unexpected and uplifting moment that brought me back to a surreal space and time when fire was burning in the crimson sky. There I was, an audience, soaking in the moment and belting out the song. It didn't matter I wasn't the one on stage and holding the mic. I was sucked into that universe of Major Tom (you have to know the song to make sense of this). My friend Marg-Rock, being totally in sync with the vibe saw me through its course. Thanks Marg and thanks Robin (that lady in black whom I had to meet after the song). I headed out feeling one happy camper who just went through a moment down memory lane.
