September 2011 BlogsDr. Angel C. Alcala (Sep 30, 2011) To be honest, I don't really know the man. But his name keeps surfacing like an itch you can't scratch - but in a very good way. I first heard of him through marine biologist Rene Abesamis who matter-of-factly describes Dr. Alcala's work. I forget the details but the lingering impression I have of him is that of an icon...a man of science who's the real deal. The tipping point came when I was browsing inside National Bookstore in the postcard section. Lo and behold, I saw Dr. Alcala's postcard, side by side with Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio...more »» 7th Philippine Bird Festival (Sep 23-24, 2011) As a former member of the Wildbird Club of the Philippines, it was with excitement that I anticipated the 7th annual bird festival, to be held right here in Dumaguete. Not only did I see familiar faces from the club, I also hooked-up with members of the UP Mountaineers who were likewise members of the club. It was an engaging and educational weekend as the birders took turns in talks, video presentations and discussions, but mostly for opening up to the public, the wonderful world of birds...more »» Summiting Mt. Talinis with Cuernos de Negros (Sep 16-18, 2011) I visit Mt. Talinis again, self-contained, a little apprehensive and more challenged on how I can measure up to the demand of this mountain that lords over the southern part of the Negros island. I'm part of a fun climb sponsored by Dumaguete's Cuernos de Negros. They hold 2 climbs a year and this is my 2nd consecutive climb. I recognize familiar faces from the Feb climb...more »» Blood Pressure Guy (Sep 5, 2011) I was enjoying my breakfast budbud and tablea chocolate drink at Dumaguete Market's Painitan area when I noticed a guy walking about, leisurely vending his blood pressure services. He was equipped with a stethoscope and a digital blood pressure reading instrument. I got curious. I asked him to sit down with me for an interview, and he obliged...more »» The Road Home (Sep 5, 2011) It's a poignat love story set in the post cultural revolution in north rural China. It stars a younger, fresher, and perhaps a more innocent-looking Zhang Ziyi. The movie is not as much on talk as it is on visual narrative. With a just a few dialogue, few narration but rich in cinematic scope, the movie is woven into a life-like story that takes you inside the movie. It feels like you're one of the villagers who was there to witness the story as it happened...more »» Truth, Anyone? (Sep 1, 2011) Many things have been said to describe truth. Of course, only in the loftiest of terms. You can't possibly go wrong using any of those truth axioms to sell your point (or make people feel better)...whatever the occasion may be - consensus meetings, life-sharings, courts of law, etc. But let's take a long hard look at truth. How many people actually subscribe to it beyond lip-service?...more »» «« back to Aug 2011 | forward to Oct 2011 »» |
