lucid thoughts

July 6, 2002 Saturday

This is it...the start of my one month leave and I'm off to the airport heading to the Philippines. I had the luxury of not having anyone on my 3-seat row. It felt like travelling first class with all that adjacent space. I covered a lot of pages reading my Astral Dynamics book.

Chari

Long airplane trips can be boring. Striking a conversation with somebody interesting with similar hobbies or lifestyle choice can be rewarding. Such was the case on my Air Canada trip from Toronto to the US. I met a fellow passenger, Chari, who's a fitness buff herself doing an occassional half marathon or so every year. We extended our conversation by having coffee at Starbucks during our layover at Seattle. She had to take a local flight after while I had to board my next plane for Tokyo.

JAL

It's JAL's 50th anniversary and it's probably why the general service was good despite my economy fare. I was given a VIP card which allowed me to wait for my flight in the exclusive JAL lounge where I can help myself to snacks and booze. Service was friendly. I'd been having white wine the entire time. Instead of some generic wine, they were serving white Bordeaux. If they want to go the whole 9 yards, they could have made it a white Burgundy, but a Bordeaux isn't exactly bad either.

JEN

My 12-hour continental flight across the Atlantic on board Japan Airlines was cramped compared to the previous flight. I got into a small talk with Jen, the passenger beside me. She's a print graphic designer who's venturing on emigrating back to Jakarta despite the current economic and political instability. All the best, Jen.
