Philippine Connection - July 15, 2002 Monday

Local Elections Day

I went with the family to Miriam School where they cast their votes. We later had Chinese food at Mongkok. It wasn't bad but I remain partial to Canadian Chinese food. I would suspect it's because my 2 Chinese officemates back in Canada, Jun and Wendy, argue intensely (if I can only understand what they're arguing about...hmmmm...for all I care they could just be talking about the weather) with the waitress while pointing out something in the menu. It's a sign good food will be served.

Megamall

We went back to Megamall to buy more pants for me. At P250/pair (CAN$8/pair), it's a steal...but with my Dad actually paying for it, it's much better than a steal. The general merchandising underscores western influence fused with local indigenousness that makes it uniquely Filipino. Since I'll be going home using public transportation, the trip promised to be interesting. They now have the MRT (think: Canadian TTC subway that's mostly above ground) which I availed. Later, I took the FX - a flat-rate air-conditioned cab that picks up passengers along a designated route. My third ride was a tricycle - a motorcycle with a sidecar.

After all the shopping, I asked them to leave me behind so I can explore the huge complex on my own. They left after imparting local tips on Manila survival. You wouldn't believe this, but....the latest racket is somebody approaches you to ask for time of day. The moment you make eye contact at close range, you fall immediately into a hypnotic trance. The next moment you snap out of it, your bankbook could be empty with cash and jewelry at home stolen. There have been many such reported cases with my brother's ex-girlfriend being a victim herself. It wasn't so bad with her. She remembers actually giving the other person her pocket book like it was the most natural thing in the world to do!

I was just in time to watch the international billiard championship featuring the Philippines' very own Efren "Bata" Junior and Django Bustamante, reputed to have the strongest break amongst all participants.
