Celebrating 25 Years of Habitat for Humanity Philippines

Location: Abreeza Mall, Davao City

Signing Up
As a new member of the Davao Bloggers, I signed-up to cover the 25th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity Philippines at Abreeza Mall, Davao City. This is a first for me - first time to join a blogger community, and my first time to officially cover an event for blogging. I'd like to get the pulse of the city. I'd been here over a month and I can't say I'm getting a sense of what's around me. This would be a good way to meet people and broaden my horizon - not to mention get up close and personal to what Habitat for Humanity is all about.

What is Habitat for Humanity Philippines?
Habitat is a non-profit organization that aims to reduce poverty housing and develop strong communities by bringing people together to build homes. Thanks to its 25 years of home-building effort, Habitat has built more than 40,000 houses nationwide. In a perfect world, Habitat hopes to provide a decent home for everyone - a home provides grounding for a strong community and breaks the vicious cycle of poverty.

Event Highlights
Several people took turns on the stage with inspiring stories about their experience. Some gave clarity on what the org hopes to achieve and others talked about life transformation. There was a folk singer who did a few songs. Finger food was served and dancers wearing Mindanao ethnic clothing were there to usher and do a bit of their dance moves. Highlight? I got to meet former Miss Universe Margie Moran who happens to be a Campaign Cabinet member. It's not everyday you see a beauty queen transcend her good looks and give something back to the community.

How can you Participate?
You can either donate money / goods (bags of cement, etc.) or volunteer. Since Habitat is non-profit, funding and volunteer work are 2 of its cornerstones to make it viable and meaningful.

Luminaries in Habitat?
I was surprised to find out that the country's most distinguished names in business, politics, media, sports and entertainment are giving their time and effort to make a difference - Pacquiao, Karen Davila, Margie Moran, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Kris Aquino, Derek Ramsay, etc. Notably, Margie Moran did the ribbon cutting.

Ending Thoughts
I agree with the tenet of Habitat - a society is not stable if you can't have decent housing for its inhabitants. A decent place you can come home to at the end of the day provides grounding, provides empowerment and consequently, nips the vicious cycle of poverty. Here's looking at the next 25 years!
