Traversing the Busuanga East-West Coast on Mountain BikesDec 14-16, 2011

Traversing the Rugged East-West Northern Coast of Busuanga Island on Mountain Bikes

Off to Camp Calauit
Outback Greg picked me up at the airport. With his 4X4 loaded with mountain bikes and provision, we headed straight to his new playground resort in Cheey: Camp Calauit - a spartan no-nonsense beach camp resort in the rugged northeast of the Busuanga Island. This place is so isolated dugongs are still sighted. Not more than a week ago, the caretaker saw one just in front of the resort - she's credible.

Home Sweet Home
I was given a native pavillion to get settled-in - just a nipa roof with no walls and an elevated bamboo floor - nothing else, and it's exactly what I wanted. I was nestled right smack on the beach where the water at high tide would skirt the pavillion posts.

Bike track

Cheey to Salvacion Traverse
Bright and early the following day, before I could get my bearings, we were already on mountain bikes to traverse the mountain range to Salvacion, the Busuanga capital on the west coast - yes, it was a coast-to-coast ride that hasn't been done before. He didn't know the way and locals were telling us we were crazy - that it was so far and difficult given the mountain that was dividing the 2 coasts. I had no opinion - I didn't want any. I just wanted to ride!

Dude, Where are We?
The trails were mostly paths carved by carabaos pulling a bamboo cart - a meter-wide double track that took us across rivers, sand, mud, stones and rocks, up and down hills. I lost count how many times we got lost. In the end, we had to turn back or risk losing daylight. Our GPS gave us a direction arrow but it was no guaranty that the trail wouldn't close down on us.

Salvacion to Cheey Traverse
The following day, we tried do it the other way around - from Salvacion going to Cheey. Again, it was a rugged trail system that required us to lubricate our pivots several times during the ride. Again, we got lost many times and had to turn back. We had to ask the locals to guide us back to the main road in the cover of darkness.

Plans for the Future
The 'mission' technically failed as we didn't make it to other side. But what a ride! From the GPS track from the 2 days, had we connected the tips from where we left off, we could have made the connection - so close! It's not the end. We haven't given up. The next time, we plan to hire a local to lead us the way - not necessarily the shortest way but the most scenic way - across waterfalls, to summits with 360 degree view, etc. Yeah, some day.
